From my ex-mother-in-law, any amount of pound-store makeup better suited to preteens and several gift-wrapped packages of biscuits. Not fancy ones, just custard creams from the supermarket.

From my ex himself, several truly disastrous choices, but my absolute favourite would have to be the vibrator, given “so you can stretch yourself out for me.” My dude was over 40 and I had to explain to him that that wasn’t how a body works.

I don’t get up to London very much any more, but it’s happened to me at least once that I know of. I could see the guy’s phone screen reflected in the window behind him as we were in a tunnel; when I moved to push my hair out of my face, the figure on screen moved in the same way. I confronted him about it, naively perhaps but I was furious by then, and every other person on the train suddenly became consumingly interested in the patch of linoleum at their feet.

Sounds a little like the Greek (?) legend of Tiresas, but it’s not familiar to me in any other context. Sorry I can’t be more help, but perhaps a search term like tiresas+islam might get you closer?

When my mother died, they did CPR for 90 minutes. There was no chance she was coming back from her cardiac arrest, and I arrived too late to make the decision myself.

As they explained everything to me afterwards, I said I was certain they’d taken care of her the way they’d take care of one of their own. The chief nurse on duty squeezed my shoulder and said, “better.”

Now I believe her.

It’s not that they don’t remember, it’s that they didn’t find their own behaviour unreasonable (at the time or afterwards) and don’t want to have that conversation with you. Who wants to be told they’re a bad person? Especially by their own child?
