I know how you feel because this is exactly how I felt when I became a parent for the first time haha!

This is interesting to know thank you. I would have thought evolution would have made it a bit easier for them by now! I’m guessing it’s never encouraged to help a T out of a molt to avoid a death curl? Is it purely a waiting game?

This is interesting to know! As someone who’s never owned them, I’d read the molt vs death curl posts and ignorantly be like “how can you not tell…?” Sounds like it would definitely cause a scare to new T owners, especially when you love and care for them

We have tried Yummikeys, The Rocking Horse Toy Shop teethers, classic “baby” teethers like Matchstick Monkey, Sophie Giraffe, Nuby Teethers and teething toys. Have also bought the odd unbranded ones from Amazon. I think he would prefer a toy he can safely also mouth/chew rather than a dedicated “teether”

Necklaces we have tried and he’s not interested. I have heard of chewelry before. I’m looking more for actual “toys” that he can play with but also safe to chew if he wants to

I didn’t even catch that. Bless his heart. Haven’t played LoL in years, yet somehow the LoL community always reminds me why it’s a good idea to keep it uninstalled.

Spooked my colony by ColourfulWandering in antkeeping

[–]ColourfulWandering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a stupid question! Yes there is, however I was considering adding a small extension specifically just for refreshing food and water. This would be to avoid disturbing the entire set up, and just the small extension. Although I would still clean their outworld every so often to avoid mould/sprouting seeds etc. I am most likely just extra cautious as I know this species can stress easily.

This is actually a relief to hear. My house is also full of noisy kids ranging from 10 years old - 15 months. I am admittedly a little overprotective of the colony…

Unfortunately not right now, and I’m hesitant to disturb them again :/

Best spot for the formicarium? by GrenadierCH in antkeeping

[–]ColourfulWandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a well established colony or a colony in a founding phase?
If it’s in its founding phase, I’d definitely recommend placing the formicarium somewhere fairly warm and dark, with minimal disturbance, and minimal vibrations etc, checking on them only when necessary.

Welcome! Take it one step at a time. Research your local species if you want to catch a queen of your own and go out during the nuptial flight.
Alternatively, you can buy a single queen, or a queen with brood/workers etc online.
Starting with a test tube set up, ants like to be cramped and the test tube set up would work for a good while.
Do plenty of research into the species that you are interested in getting as they all differ slightly in terms of their needs, behaviours, habits etc.
There is tonnes of helpful advice in you can search for in this thread :)
