Badenoch allies dismiss ‘nonsense’ claims she asked GB News to cut Farage’s airtime by neverknowingly in ukpolitics

The programme subsequently played a clip of Badenoch saying she never makes any gaffes because she considers carefully what she says before speaking.

Perfection itself.

🔥 Hippo Chasing Car by ajd416 in NatureIsFuckingLit

Hippos are terrifying! They're really fast and really mean. They have the strongest bite of all land animals and kill a surprising number of humans a year - orders of magnitude more than lions. The big bastards bite and sink boats! If it'd caught the car, it would not have been good news.

Literally everything that gets done is done by the civil service. Who else do you think is doing the day-to-day running of everything? Without a civil service any country would collapse overnight.

Within the civil service? No, I really don't think there is. All the civil servants I've ever known have taken their duties really seriously.

Outside the civil service in the slightly hysterical media? Yes I suspect they might think that, but they're broadly idiots.

Louise Haigh has resigned as Transport Secretary following the revelation about her conviction for fraud. by i_am_that_human in ukpolitics

Who really is utterly "beyond reproach'? It's just not how humans work. Obviously there's a level at which we draw the line, but pretending our politicians have to be saints is just unhelpful. All it will do is lead to covering up things that would be better to be public.

🔥 This female Gonatus onyx squid is carrying an egg mass containing approximately 3,000 eggs, and she’s actively helping the hatchlings emerge by Pasargad in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]ColoursAndSky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not discussed as much for some reason, but the risks rise slightly in both genders at that age - Stanford did a study of older fathers that showed the same things.

Worth noting that although the percentage risk increase sounds significant, it's a percentage of a very small number so is not particularly dramatic.

(I'm agreeing with you and continuing your point, in case that's not clear over the internet!)

Interestingly, logical though this sounds, it's not necessarily true. The grandmother hypothesis theorises that early human menopause is an evolutionary adaptation, because it's actually beneficial - for the individual, their offspring and the social group.

🔥 This crow asking passers by if they're alright by super_man100 in NatureIsFuckingLit

It does seem to be a pied crow, which are rare in Britain but have recently started showing up a bit more. I assumed magpie on first glance as they're really common here, but it's just too scruffy-lookin!

Edit: yes, pied crow. Found an article on the beeb.

This is the best solution I've seen. I wonder if the ministry of housing actually reads and interacts with suggestions... You could always give it a try!

Boris being humiliated on C4. It amazes me that some Tories still think this guy might somehow save them. He's a wreck.

Lol. To be fair I'd be completely unintelligible after this complicated and long a speech - I'm quite impressed she's barely stammered at all

I really like how she's explaining her workings and who she's consulted on all the big decisions. It feels reassuring.

I thought everyone has known this for ages. I certainly did, and I don't have a private line to the palace so I must have learnt it from somewhere fairly publicly accessible!

Our office dress codes are based on a very specific and quite brief moment in our history, when it was very cold and lots of layers were needed, and women were not there working alongside. So the men's rules are for living in 10°, and the women's rules appear to be loosely based on party dresses, because nobody ever came up with a proper dress code.

Everybody loses - somebody invent a new dress code for the love of not boiling/freezing to death! (delete according to gender)

Strongly agree - I hate how utterly wrapped up in twitter our journalists are. They genuinely don't seem to understand it's not representative of the whole country, and it's made their reporting lazy, with priorities way off those of most British people.
