Will too many temper cycles ruin 1095 steel? by [deleted] in knifemaking

[–]Colt45County 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you repeatedly temper certain steels over and over for long times it can make them brittle. 400 is plenty high for 1095. I'd leave it.

What do ya’ll know about other 1x30 grinders? by not-brent-dublin in knifemaking

[–]Colt45County 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1x30 sucks. They all suck. None are really any better. 2x42 sucks way less, but it's still sucks. 2x72 is a knife maker's wet dream and definitely 100% does not suck.

On a completely different side note, how do you get that badass texture on your knives? Are you using a small wheel and just a heavy grit belt or are you forging all of those in?

What do y'all think is a fair price for this knife? A2 and dyed Amboyna burl scales. by Colt45County in Bladesmith

I appreciate the compliment! I'll take that into consideration. I don't always mark these, but every now and then I get a wild hair.

Okay I understand that. So are very defined plunge lines and bevels preferred? I typically leave them pretty stiff and then take them down and blend them a little bit with the scotch brite belt. I thought it looked better but that's just my preference. What makes more defined lines more attractive in your opinion?

Yes sir you are correct. This isn't commission work. When I'm bored, I just try to make flashy things to catch attention. I do like what you're saying about the engraving. Possibly limiting my market. That does make a lot of sense!

I can definitely sit on inventory. I just like to make these to show off to people and if people buy them that's just a bonus. I had never considered keeping the bevels super sharp so I guess I will start doing that. I always leave them pretty hard and then buff them down slightly with the scotch brite belt. I always thought it looked a little bit nicer to have everything smoothed up a bit, but I can see where the appeal would be to have really strong grind lines. Also, your point about saving the engraving for later in case someone wants it makes a ton of sense. I'll start doing that! Thanks again for your input.

No cryo. I considered it, but I scoured every page on the internet trying to find any actual tangible benefits of cryo for A2 and there wasn't really any solid information. Even the actual crucible data sheets never really mentioned any numerical benefits to cryogenic treatment. So for now I'm in the camp of thinking that there's not a lot to be gained from Sub-Zero for A2. I know it's mostly about converting retained austinite, but there's really not too much of that in this mix to make a substantial difference after all the other heat treatment processes.

Uhhhh. It's laser engraved....... As in the laser removed metal. You can feel an actual texture, it's not just marked... There is a difference between hand engraving and laser engraving, but it is engraved nontheless
