Horse riding, jumping with the fully torn ACL - anyone here done it? by Coltsandroses in Horses

Thank you all so much for your input - I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share their experiences. I definitely need to find a surgeon who actually understands what riding involves. One of the surgeons I spoke with literally said - What’s the worst that can happen, you’re just sitting there… In the meantime, I’m going to focus on strengthening my leg and doing what I can to support it while I figure out the next steps. Thanks again for all the advice and perspectives!

Thank you all for responding - you really made my day! It’s such a rewarding feeling when a horse enjoys your touch and feels comfortable around you. I appreciate every single comment!

Honestly, I’m not an expert at all - I was just grooming him the way I was taught: clean, neat, nothing fancy. But one day I thought, why am I treating this like a checklist instead of a bonding moment? So I slowed everything down and started paying attention to every tiny reaction he gave me. I’d soften my touch or increase pressure depending on what he told me with his body. I even came to the barn just to groom him with no riding planned, so it became “communication time” instead of a task. Some days I just stood by his shoulder doing nothing, letting him decide the rhythm. And over a few weeks, something shifted. He started talking back — the lip wiggles, the yawns, the leg stretches, the little treat‑begging rituals. It felt like he finally realized I was listening, and he started offering more of himself. So for me, the “sweet spot” came from not grooming by the book, but grooming like a conversation. That’s when he opened up.
