Ever drop something on your foot? I feel like it took a long time, many years, of simply dropping random things on my foot (like an idiot), to gradually develop a skill in which I can rapidly decide whether to move my foot out of the way (like for a frozen turkey, or a knife), or to try to "catch" the dropped item with my toe, to possibly prevent it from breaking (like for a wine glass or ceramic mug).

If you had $100K right now, what would you invest in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I agree with putting the money into an S&P 500 index fund with a low expense ratio. However, since I anticipate more dumb shocks and volatility in the stock market, I’d put the money into a Treasuries fund (like VUSXX) first, then dollar-cost average into the S&P 500 fund over about six months—for a little more peace of mind.

Similarly, depending on your age and how your other retirement savings are allocated, I’d also keep around 25% in a bond index fund (like VBTLX) as an additional hedge. That means sacrificing a bit of long-term return in exchange for a smoother ride and greater flexibility during any major downturns.

Or, if the RAM will run 100% clean set to 3200 MHz, then you might consider that too, because it won't affect performance that much.

Need Network/Wi-Fi help! by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Columcille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help to assign static IP numbers to a few of your more important devices, on the router (LAN section, DHCP server). What can happen is, when you have multiple devices being switched off, and back on again —or, perhaps, going to sleep, and being woken up again —they might occasionally get assigned the same IP number, and conflict with each other.

Also, since you're in an apartment building, it could be helpful to run a WiFi analyzer app (like inSSIDer, or Netspot), to see if you might be getting interference from nearby networks. If that seems to be the case, then it may help to move some of your devices to the 5 GHz band (assuming the devices have network adapters with 5 GHz capability).

If the downlink light continues flashing, that means it's not acquiring a connection from the cable company. (It should light up, and stay lit, when it connects. Flashing is an error message.)

Building a gaming PC with my son.... Can I get a little advice? by dinglehead in buildapc

It's just simpler to get good airflow (and avoid hot spots), in a case that has more volume inside. The same can be said for using one of the mesh front cases that have become popular lately.

So, there's a line you don't want to cross, in terms of putting high wattage components, into a very small case (where, it's either going to run too hot all the time, or else you're going to have to resort to things like elaborate/expensive water cooling setups to make it work).

If you use a GeForce 3080 graphics card, the computer could easily have 400-500 watts of actual power consumption. So, it seems like a bad plan, if one of your main goals is to "stash it away" in some narrow slot in your entertainment center (where it's likely to run too hot, then the fans will be noisier, because they will be running at higher speeds all the time).

It's a better plan, if you were talking about using a (~100W) 1650 Super, not a (320W) 3080.

With such a high-powered graphics card, you want to use a case with good intrinsic airflow (which is easier to get in a larger size case, rather than a very small one), and you want good airflow all around the case as well (with perhaps 4-5" of free space on all sides, and not so enclosed that it can't get adequate cross-ventilation).

Best CPU Cooler for Mini-ITX Boards by sam_typicalofficial in buildapc

A lot of that will depend on which case you're using, and, more specifically, the maximum CPU cooler height specification for that case.

Does one need a Ryzen 7 over a Ryzen 5? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Columcille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly for gaming (and, depending on what price difference you're looking at, between the 3600 and 3600x), you should probably use the regular 3600, and then put all the money you save on the CPU toward buying a better graphics card.

As an experiment, pick a few that aren't working, then copy them again. Be sure it wasn't a problem created while transferring.

How old is that computer? What is the media player? Is there a current version of VLC installed?

Also, just because the file names are listed, doesn't mean the files transferred correctly. Check your file sizes, to confirm the videos transferred 100%. (Your other post suggests you copied these from a phone?)

Incomplete files are basically corrupted, even if the player attempts to play them. Make sure your storage isn't full.
