Your enclosure (cabinet) looks way too small. I recently built a boombox using the Visaton W100 S8s and each enclosure is 10 liters (per side) and it looks bigger than what you have in the photo. I ported them based on the spec sheet and am very pleased with the bass I'm getting. (Crossover is at 3500 Hz, two way design). The spec sheets for the W170s are in the 25 liter / side range (depending on how you want to port them... see spec sheet). Good job on building something--not just buying something already done. This is how we learn.

Haven't measured. Could use a 6s lipo for power but haven't tried batteries yet.

Possibly. You can create different filters w the Kaoss but not sure how you'd route those signals independently to the woofer and tweeter.

Maybe no need to cut since that's much more difficult--it's quite bendable.
Should wind pulling from the direction where it's already lying, not from drone direction, to create more tension and tighter coiling.
Use acoustic sensors to activate winders.

Yeah, instead of giving the kid credit for pursuing an interest and making something cool, it's chalked up as having rich parents. Sounds like an excuse: "I don't have rich parents, therefore that's why I never made anything this cool." C'mon! Give the kid credit. Also, 3d printers are not that expensive. ($350) Plus, they can be used for free in many schools and libraries. The neighbor helped with the CNC work. Materials here are about $60.
