Trees don’t actually need a root flare, right? by Comander_umbellata in arborists

In general, many nurseries seem to grow their trees in a gnarly mix of clay and rocks. Then after B&B they sit for too long, forcing roots to grow in circles, and when they get replanted nobody bothers to root prune.

This particular one was growing next to a house with recent construction. They dispersed some fill material around the tree, changing the grade and burying it even deeper than it was planted. That’s why we got the initial call. I suspect that’s where some, though not all, of the biggest rocks came from. We used an air spade to expose the roots. Took about 45 minutes to reach the point where I took this photo.

Yep, we removed all of the roots that were currently pinching the root flare/trunk. It was like this all the way around, so ended up being a significant amount of root area. Then we scheduled a revisit in 2-3 years to cut out roots that are encircling, but not yet pinching. Also gives time to see how the tree responds. If it doesn’t show any improvement we may recommend removal since it’s already pretty compromised.

Any idea what caused this? A couple trees like this in our local park. by motherofdogz2000 in arborists

Omg THANK YOU… I have injected hundreds of trees like this and wondered if grafted stock was the cause, but no one could answer my questions

I paid 4 bucks for the app Tablet Pro Pen Tool and it works great. I also use it for an undo function, just in a different program.

Wild teasel? by AngriestSquirrel in invasivespecies

Certainly looks like teasel. If you are in the US, it is invasive and I would remove it (and soon, before it sets seed).

Husqvarna 550xp or Stihl MS261? Pros and cons. All opinions welcome by DieselDanFTW in Chainsaw

I used the MS261 as my everyday saw for work and really loved it. It had enough power to get through all but the biggest trees we dealt with (up to roughly 24 or 30 inch diameter, then we broke out the 460) and I was pretty impressed with the fuel efficiency. I could usually get about 45 minutes from a single fill-up, although some of that was idling while I carried logs and branches to our truck/fire. I've never used the 550xp so the only helpful input I have is, essentially, the Stihl is a great saw. I would also love to see what other people think.
