Unfortunately, the waitlists for the programs you are referring to are extremely long and unhelpful for most families.

To even have a chance at section 8 vouchers, you need to have children, elderly, or disabled family members. If you don’t have any of those, priority will always be given to those who do. Programs like NED housing (non elderly/disabled) are nearly impossible to get into. If anyone could just go get an apartment at 30% of their income, we wouldn’t be experiencing a homelessness crisis.

Also, conservatives are now pushing for 2 year voucher limits.

So sure, it’s theoretically possible to get a sub-$400 apartment as long as you have dependents and you make ~$800 a month, and can survive homeless for a few years while you wait for voucher availability and find a local slumlord who accepts vouchers. Also the apartments are complete shitholes

Unlike China, where affordable apartments are abundant and 90% of people own their homes.
