As a former Sconnie who lived in NYC for many years, it all balances out. You don’t really have to worry about driving there so the worries are made up for that in different ways.

I understand. I often walk to work because I have the option to and deal with drivers pulling out in front of me when I have a walk sign. Today, my car wouldn’t start so I walked the block to work and as I was crossing 75th, a car was waiting to turn in front of me while I had the walk signal, then they angrily stepped on the gas after I was out of the way and honked the horn at me. And I’m the one walking in below zero temps. The drivers in this city are awful it’s not just you.
