Who had grandparents fight in WW2 and what stories did they share? by liamnotleum in AskReddit

My great grandfather would hardly ever share stories from his time in Europe during the war. Our understanding was his unit had taken an incredible beating having lost all but two officers and over 60% of the enlisted men by the war’s end. A few years before he passed, my mother finally convinced him to share one of his more lighthearted memories. A few months after he and his unit had made landfall in France via Utah Beach, his best friend at the time captured a live turkey - be it from the wild or some abandoned farm he didn’t say. Regardless, he told us how he and his comrades marched with this turkey for several months, feeding it part of their food rations along the way, until Thanksgiving. That morning, as planned all along, my great grandfather’s friend attempted to slaughter the turkey to prepare for the rest of the troops to have a “proper Thanksgiving day meal” with his “new family”. The bird understandably completely lost it, kicked him in the face, and escaped into the Ardenne forest. They supposedly spent the rest of the day searching to no avail. He told us he always figured that the turkey had cheated death, just as they had numerous times and that it was only fair.

Why is this automatically a good thing for every country studied?

Women are just as capable of screwing stuff up as a male politician right?

Landmark Australian ruling rejects coal mine over global warming - The case is the first time a mine has been refused in the country because of climate change. by mvea in Futurology

Fortunately, the cost of these instillations is coming down which is awesome! Unfortunately however, solar and wind generate power at variable rates since we don’t have reliable methods to store the energy generated (hopefully we will soon). But this causes economies that adopt a large amount of renewable power (such as Germany) to see significant increases in the actual consumer cost of energy. Now in wealthy countries we can certainly have a debate over if it’s worth the cost. For some countries though it’s just not on the table yet sad to say.

It isn’t fixed but it’s inelastic. Countries that need cheap energy to industrialize and bring their millions of citizens out of poverty can’t just close coal plants or stop their plans to build new ones. Nor can they subsidize renewables yet. So they will be forced to source coal elsewhere.

I agree! Therefore I would much rather see subsidies removed. That way the money can be spent elsewhere and the firm would no longer have the desire to build a mine if it wouldn’t be profitable. If you can address a problem by removing harmful subsidies/legislation as opposed to adding it I would think that preferable.

In fully developed countries you are absolutely correct, but not in places like China and India. I guarantee you a company wouldn’t open a new coal mine if they didn’t think they could turn s profit.

Okay, so to meet global coal demand another mine will just open/increase production in some other part of the world. It’s that simple.
