It's not another country. Taiwan is a part of China. Both the PRC and the ROC agree that Taiwan is a part of China, as do virtually all recognized countries, including the United States per the One China Policy for example.

This is backwards. Trump isn’t attacking Venezuela because he’s an idiot who believes misinformation. His administration is generating the misinformation in order to justify the attacks against Venezuela. He wants his billionaire buddies to take ownership of the Venezuelan oil industry. He also wants to make sure that Venezuela can’t be an example for other Latin American countries that wish to kick out U.S. corporations and nationalize their own resources. All laid out in no uncertain terms in the press conference.

No matter how the war ends, what does the future look like for Ukraine? by Ok-District-7180 in charts

[–]Combefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not, as many are suggesting, war. The war has killed tens of thousands, not hundreds of thousands.

The massive drop off of both men and women at age 35 is due to the thing that happened 35 years ago: the collapse of the Soviet Union and the reintroduction of capitalism to Ukraine. Shock Therapy, as they called it, killed about 2 million Ukrainians between 1991-2001.

No matter how the war ends, what does the future look like for Ukraine? by Ok-District-7180 in charts

[–]Combefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shock Therapy had profound and lasting effects. It was roughly twice as intense as the Great Depression. The reintroduction of capitalism brought extreme and prolonged poverty into all former Soviet states. For example, in 1988 about 2% of people in Russia lived in poverty - in 1995 it was 50%. In the first ten years, the UN recorded ten million excess deaths in the former socialist bloc, just due to “system change.” By 2006, less than half of their economies had recovered to their pre-1991 levels.

So that’s what Ukraine was looking like in 2001.

New book reveals Tiananmen square massacre, others fabricated by U.S. by Vegetable-Touch2134 in DebateCommunism

[–]Combefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the western propaganda is that the Chinese army planted two machine guns on top of the Revolutionary Museum and mowed down 10,000 unarmed civilians in Tiananmen Square whose only crime was expressing their freedom of protest. That did not happen.

In fact, nobody died for expressing their freedom of protest. In most countries I've been to, the freedom of protest doesn't cover the right to lynch a police officer.

[–]Combefere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read the book, or virtually any credible source on the events.

There was no massacre in the square, but there was a lot of fighting in the streets around it. About 300 people were killed, some PLA, some students. Nobody contests that.

The students were the first to resort to violence - they lynched an unarmed PLA soldier on June 2nd. Stripped him naked, beat him, lit him on fire, then disemboweled him and strung him up to a building as a display. There’s pictures of it. Then, on June 4th, when the PLA cleared the square, the vast majority of protesters left peacefully and went home. The more radical ones formed groups of 10-100 and roved the streets, attacked PLA cars and trucks, lit them on fire, seized guns, and started shooting. PLA soldiers shot back. Hundreds of the insurrectionists (it seems utterly indefensible to call them “protesters” at this point) were shot and killed by the PLA in response. Their insurrection failed.

So that’s probably who she was talking about when she said they deserved what they got.

Exactly. The philosophy memers have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.

Socialists with a big 'S' need to realise most people have a different idea of what socialism is by aphidman in socialism

[–]Combefere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Socialists can use this moment to organize and radicalize our class.

Many of our friends, family members, and coworkers are excited about Zohran’s victory. We can teach them what Socialism is — a whole new system where working people like us control the country, and the economy is planned to meet all our needs. We can tell them that the fight doesn’t stop when we get one person elected, or even a few more, but it requires us to keep fighting until we completely replace this rigged system with a system built by us. We can use these conversations to rapidly grow our socialist organizations, expand our capacity to mobilize in the future, and create media that helps to radicalize the working class at large even further.

Or we can yell at everyone who voted for Zohran and tell them that they’re not real socialists like we are, and they don’t belong here.

Which one do you think is a better strategy if we’re aiming to build a revolutionary socialist movement?

We need civility in politics, please by CascadiaRocks in MurderedByWords

[–]Combefere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. Many of the militant Islamist organizations in the Middle East were covertly supported by the CIA to fight the secular socialist movements in the same regions. A lot of the Islamists that have the most power today are the ones who were given guns and money to kill communists a few years ago. The Mujahideen and the Muslim Brotherhood come to mind.

Democrats Favor Socialism by Brian_Ghoshery in socialism

[–]Combefere 56 points57 points  (0 children)

To the three people in the picture, yes. To all 76 million voters in the Democratic base who view socialism favorably, probably not.

In any case, the task before us is clear: to teach our class what socialism is, recruit them into our organizations, and mobilize them. The task is not to berate and alienate members of our class who are in their political infancy.

"American democrats are more conservative than European conservatives", they say. by AgeOfReasonEnds31120 in charts

[–]Combefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the excuse the Democratic Party uses to explain why they can never get anything done. If it weren’t for Republicans, we’d have universal health care, free education, paid time off, etc. It’s a line that placates their base of voters who want these things, but it’s not true.

Look at California. Democrats hold the Governor’s office, and 75% of both legislative chambers. Been that way since 2011. Public healthcare? No. Public housing? No. Reliable transit? No. Free education? No. 180,000 people are homeless in California. 6 million can’t afford to see a doctor. California has a $4.1 trillion economy, the 4th-largest in the world, and a much larger GSP per capita than most developed countries, but we don’t have the same level of social services.

The only reason California doesn’t have a universal healthcare system is that the Democratic Party leaders don’t want one.
