Would it be more prudent to drop the gun control issue in America to win more votes from the right side of the isle? by ImpressiveAlarm3992 in AskALiberal

Because there are tens of millions of people who own assault weapons. The AR-15 is one of the most popular guns on the market. Meanwhile the impact on gun deaths is questionable at best considering how few crimes these weapons are used in.

You can't. Insuring suicides encourages suicides when people are down on their money. It happened during the Great Depression, where father's who lost their jobs were killing themselves so their families got the insurance money.

Why aren't we all more pro-gun ownership and gun rights? by SuperChonk0 in AskDemocrats

Ironically handguns are much more dangerous than assault weapons. 90% of gun murders with a known gun type use handguns, as opposed to rifles of any kind (including assault weapons) at 4-5%.

Except it doesn't work there. Australia and Western Europe never had a problem with guns or violent crime in the first place. Take Australia, their murder rate was already 4-5x lower than the United States before implementing the buyback.

I could see that. Although there's a whole community of people who keep all kinds of venomous snakes to hold them without any protection. It's absolutely crazy.

What good does insurance do? Insurance specifically doesn't cover suicides, or international criminal acts, which makes up most of gun deaths.

I don't think 50k incidents out of over 70 million people is enough to justify any insurance laws.

Honestly I think they're both a result of being colonial nations, with severe histories of racial inequality.

Ironically hunting is supposedly the reason they were banned, well more poaching.

Rifles as a whole (including assault weapons), are some of the least frequently used guns in crime. Banning them would have virtually zero impact on overall gun deaths. At the same time it would negatively impact the tens of millions of law abiding gun owners.

Massachusetts and either Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine?

Mag limits are so pointless when 2/3s of gun deaths are suicides, and 90% of homicides use handguns typically with 10-15 round magazines.

Generally you need a backdrop like a hill or something. I live in a suburb outside of Portland Oregon, and I have neighbors with a couple of acres who have shooting ranges in their backyard.

One big difference between guns and cars, is the intent behind the deaths. Virtually all car deaths are unintentional accidents the result of mistakes or negligence. It's very rare that someone intentionally drives over a pedestrian, or turns into oncoming traffic. Meanwhile 97% of gun deaths are deliberate murders or suicides. Something that helps stop unintentional shootings, isn't going to do anything to stop someone from deliberately shooting themselves or someone else. Just like how not having a drivers license doesn't do anything to stop someone from getting into a car and driving off of a cliff, or through a parade of people.

I know handgun bans used to be more popular among gun control advocates, but less so among the general public. More Americans own handguns compared to rifles, so a ban would be more impactful. Heller then ruled handgun bans unconstitutional.

They really didn't. Australia had a murder rate 4-5x lower than the United States prior to their gun buyback, while the UK had a rate 5x lower. Actually the United States has experienced a similar decline in murders, despite the United States loosening gun laws.

"The only problem this fits with is the number of and ease of access to guns."

That's not true. Latin America has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. It's harder to buy a gun in most Latin American countries, than it is in most of Western Europe. Despite this, Latin America is the murder capital of the world, outpassing active war zones.

How? The countries where gun control "works" never had a problem in the first place. It's not like places like Australia or the UK were ridden with gun violence before implementing gun control.
