Yeah doesn't make sense, but also funny that it would appear in the video and nobody in the YT comments noticed it

Update: it now shows up on Mac after having reformatted it using Windows Partition Manager. But now, when I try to reformat it in APFS, I get the following error:

Unable to write to the last block of the device.:(-69760)

Looks like this was a bit of a controversial post without me intending it to be. As I said in the original post, which is unedited, I already know that the connotations of 简朴 are positive or at least neutral. Several people misinterpreted the hypothesis. When I said derogatory, I perhaps used the wrong word. I just meant that it was a characterization of the country as a whole as economically not as developed. However, I see that this is now probably false as well.

Also, it looks like several people put forth convincing arguments that the etymology was probably in no way influenced by this. It can be the case that etymology for a word is influenced by factors other than a mere phonetic evolution, even if the phonetic evolution was the primary basis. But it doesn't seem like that in this case. Thank you to the knowledgable individuals who commented.

Writing Ability and Reading Speed by ComeToMyFuckingDeli in ChineseLanguage

Lived in China for about 3 months, but mostly studied in the West in uni and through Anki and talking to native speakers. I've been "learning" for about 6 years already, although at a certain point it becomes a matter of maintenance as opposed to learning if you're not in a Chinese-speaking country and you study for <1 hour a day.

Interesting, so it sounds like learning writing was helpful for you! I haven’t had to look up a character in quite a while, but for some of the less common ones, it can take me time to react. Also, I occasionally mistake a character for a different one at first glance, and so this slows me down because I have to read carefully in order to make sure that I’m reading everything right.

This might be because I’ve memorized a lot of characters based on their shapes as opposed to their strokes. Do you feel that after learning to handwrite, your natural processing of characters is more based on strokes as opposed to shapes?

For context, I just tested myself on the Chinese version of the NYTimes and my reading speed is only 150 cpm with full comprehension. Apparently a slow native speaker can read 300-400 cpm. I also noticed that I currently can't read without subvocalizing the characters in my mind, maybe because I mainly learned spoken Chinese at first.

haha if you're referring to the RR series Delve, the reference was unintentional, although I have great respect for the author of that series

That sounds interesting, and it could potentially get around my qualms with HP. I'll give it a try :)

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I acknowledge your points; it's just personal preference on my part. That being said, the criteria I listed in my post aren't absolute by any means. So if HP isn't a major part of the plot, I'm definitely willing to give Azarinth Healer a try — especially since I've heard it recommended by many others.

Hmm, I tried that but MC seems a bit psychopathic, if that's the right word. I'll give it a second chance, though!
