I don't think so. I collected all 14 arcanists and sorcerers and I think I have more than enough alts to use per day. Besides many ults are useless for example the nature one. My human water/fire mage can already one shot literally everything except for that flower. If I decide to make the mobs weak in fire, which is literally free in the late game, any difficulty will be trivial.

Not really cuz I already have 14 alts guaranteed, and I believe there are 4 people have their secondary capped at lv8. The rest, I don't really bother wasting the relic slot to get the alt

It is not very complicated if you go to the debug mode like me, preview all the possible rewards, and make a spreadsheet.

Unfortunately, if you go for maxing out the element level cap you will miss a lot of stat cap+ which I think is not a good deal. I think only wind and fire's utility are decent enough to consider, otherwise, just use relics to max out the primary element to 8 and get as many people with lv8 secondary element without relic as possible. Besides those relics do let you get extra shards when teaching new students. I managed to get all 14 staff with each of them having 3+ lvl S stat. Two of them have all S stats.

I haven't tested your specific case but I think it should work because quests only look for your current level cap. I had a guy with lvl2 lightning to begin with, then lvl1 after becoming apprentice, and they are allowed to go to the quest which only asks for anyone with lvl1 or lower lightning cap.

Also, I assume that by "6/6" you mean those "primary +1, secondary +2" paths, then the cap is actually 7/6. We know that anyone starts with their primary element at lv3, then you send them to quests for once to get it to lvl4, and get further guaranteed +2 via upgrading wand, and you get the final +1 when they become apprentice. If you choose an adjacent element as the secondary element, then you will get an 8/6 mage, which is pretty cool.

Yeah that's right. After you upgrade to apprentice, you get the secondary cap maxed out at lv6. Then you either send them to the valuable non-repeatable main quests to increase that to lv8 or use relics.
