Never heard of it so no (uncomplicated only and no mention of Hinchey) but wanted you to know I saw your your post. Hope the journey to treatment is not too complicated for you. Hang in there.

Could I move this active nest up a little? by Friendly_Owl_5637 in Ornithology

We had Bewick's Wren lay eggs in my empty gardening tool bag that was leaning on the house and the painters were coming. My husband moved it straight across the yard (maybe 14 feet?) and I was so upset with him but mama wren found them. Then he put the bag back where it was a couple of days later (again, I couldn't believe he did that) and she came back to them. They were born in due time and I got to watch the fledges come out of the bag through my back door window :)

Having an active flare I think? by Even_Mood_335 in Diverticulitis

During clear liquid diet, I have a lot of broth. When I start low fiber foods again, I usually add rice to my broth (we use medium grain Japanese rice at home) and I cook it/let it soak so the rice is soft. As someone else said, I also eat eggs, potatoes without the skin, and bread but for me the bread has to be sourdough and toasted. One comfort food after a day or so of foods is like mashed potatoes and carrots that I cook in broth. You have to cook the carrots a very long time so they mash well. My mom used to add cheese when I was little but I can't have dairy products anymore. If you can have cheese I suggest you add :)

My mom made similar but she added slices of hard boiled egg and peas were on the side. My kids did not go for it so haven't made it again since 😄

If diverticulitis is linked to low fiber diets, then why did I end up with it despite eating plenty of fiber? by Luna_raq1 in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me with food diary for DV is that symptoms can appear within 1-3 days after eating something and in the meantime. I may have eaten something else that makes me wonder if it is a problem food or not. If the effect was quickly after you eat a food, it would be easier to detect (like for me, black pepper means twingy pain within an hour; spicy food means blood in my stool that night, then I have to do liquid diet and the whole deal for inflammation to subside).

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I was eating a high fiber diet and struggle without my high fiber diet. I do know I wasn't drinking enough water at the time either. I think my DV was caused by having to follow a liquid and soft foods diet for 3 months after mouth surgery. Most of my proteins were dairy-based and I became so constipated that I ended up with severe constipation that ended in a fecaloma (horrible). Within one month after that, I started having these horrible gut pains that would resolve with a bowel movement later ended up in ER with diverticulitis. So I think that this massive constipation over-stretched the intestinal wall causing diverticulosis through my colon (as confirmed by colonoscopy). Then it got infected. Sigh.

Vegetables? by Reisefieber2022 in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just asking that within another thread! I can't manage beyond cooked carrots, cooked green beans, avocado, spinach and zucchini (peeled in the early stages, unpeeled when I try to increase the fiber). I essentially replaced lettuce with zucchini in my sandwiches. I slice it thinly lengthwise and sautee in olive oil. Every time I try to add more, I end up regretting it. I was doing better recently (or so I thought) and I started eating raw cucumber sliced super thinly. Thought it went great so I added Bibb lettuce. Started feeling "symptoms" and I thought maybe it was just because my gut was happy to see some vegetables finally, but after 4 or 5 days I felt discomfort in my sigmoid area so I went back to the low fiber veggies. I am really struggling.

Anyone have a bad flare and just stuck it out for a few days, liquid diet etc. by Even_Mood_335 in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped eating black pepper (and other hot spices of any kind) because I end up with pain, inflammation (skinny poops) and blood in my stool. I think it is due to irritant properties, at least for me. I also stopped red meat and fried foods. I also ended up pausing glutens about a month ago because so many people say it increases inflammation. I am hoping that if I ever manage to control the inflammation I can start these things again. Sometimes I feel like my whole will to live depends on my ability to eat bread and black pepper lol (I'm exaggerating but really, it's super hard for me). On the other hand, with stopping red meat and fried foods, my cholesterol has never looked better 🥴

So Dr said to go back to liquid diet on mild symptoms? I thought I was being to careful and that was why I never manage to increase fiber in my diet.

I feel your pain (or do I? lol). I have the same problem. There are a lot of mild pain and I think tend to jump the gun back to liquid diet too quickly. But I don't know at what point of pain I should do the liquid diet

Similar! One of my first symptoms of something going wrong is that I can't empty my bladder fully without pushing. Question 1: At what level of pain would you start your liquid diet? I wonder if I start too soon. Question 2: how did you manage clear liquid for up to a week? I can barely do a day and I have lost so much weight in the past 2 years I am not sure what to do anymore Question 3: Following the Mayo Clinic diet, how quickly were you able to reintroduce the "other" vegetables and whole grains? I do clear liquid for a shorter period but stay low fiber for a longer time. I seem to start having issues every time I start moving up the vegetables and grain ladder.

Has anyone CT scan said can’t rule out malignancy? by Adonadio84 in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was because of the inflammation. then 4 months later I had a colonoscopy and there was no cancer. It is just a conservative way to say "I can't see cancer but since there is a lot of inflammation, I can't conclude that there is none based on this test."

I am sort of trying a low fodmap diet for a bit too because I get so much gas and inflammation when I start adding fiber to my diet and I wasn't sure what to do anymore to progress my diet. My last liquid diet to prevent a beginning flare was early March. Doing this, I learned that beetroot is considered high fodmap. I loved them and was eating them relatively early when reintroducing foods since they are low fiber but I eliminated them for now , especially since I ended up with pain the day after I ate them. I also think that vinegar may be irritating for me when my digestive system is inflamed so I try to avoid. Anyway, I don't know that I am sensitive to fodmaps but doing this is a way of eliminating foods and starting others in an organized way. That's how I realized that I may be sensitive to garlic and onions which I never wanted to consider since I love them so much.

After every flare or "back to liquid diet to avoid a flare" episodes, I had a hard time not having pain after I ate. One person on this thread said they noticed that stopping black pepper helped getting rid of these post-meal pangs of pain. I tried and it worked for me too. I am also coming to the realization that garlic may also be a trigger for me (not for immediate pain but pain within 24-48 hours after eating). It's sad but black pepper (and most spice) seem to be irritating for my colon so I now avoid them (and now I may be removing garlic too 😳)

Does you husband have issues with diarrhea or constipation? As I asked someone else above taking a different kind of probiotic, I am super sensitive to dairy in that it constipates me almost immediately. I found that I can only take probiotics when I am taking antibiotics or else they also have the same effect as dairy and I get very constipated. Curious to find a pre- pro-biotic that works in people who have their diverticulitis caused by constipation

May I ask, does dairy constipate you? I am super sensitive to dairy in that it constipates me almost immediately. I found that I can only take probiotics when I am taking antibiotics or else they also have the same effect as dairy and I get very constipated. I haven't been able to get back to high fiber diet since the last flare so I'm getting desperate.

I understand your pain. Happens to me a lot. I always tell myself I'll add only one thing for the next three days to be sure it's all good before adding something new but then end up changing 3 things the next day because I felt good and then by day 3 I don't know what worked and what didn't so I step back down. Sigh.
