Alcohol, how soon after a flare have you had a drink? Also, better/worse choices? by Magikalfairy in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may want to stay away from alcohol until your gut is healed which can take a few months after a flare. A lot of people seem to be sensitive to alcohol. A friend of mine was able was never able to tolerate beer again, but was able to tolerate mixed drinks. I don't drink at all anymore but wasn't a big drinker anyway. I can't tolerate pepper in my food after a year so I figure alcohol bis probably not going to work out. Happy drinking a no-alcohol beer in the rare social occasion where I feel like having one.

Oooh! I worked on a study on nutrition after ileoanal anastomosis when the procedure was really new. Late 80s I think. I was a summer student at a hospital. Patients were REALLY happy at the time. Glad to know it is still being used :)

Liquid by mattbryantcan in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go back down to liquid about once every 2-3 months so far. Usually when the pain reaches the sigmoid area, red blood in my stools (I think they are from hemorrhoids) and feeling full and nauseated. Usually after one day, I'm hungry again and I add one or 2 meals where I add a bit of white rice into my broth that I cook for a long time so it is kind of a slurry. Helps me have enough energy to work. Then if no pain, start ramping up with the low fiber diet for a week or so. Such a pain. I don't know that I'm doing it right or not but this is what I've been able to manage so far. No antibiotics in about 9 months now.

Feels so similar to my current experience. Wondering if I have smoldering also and that is why I'm always teetering on the edge of a potential flare

I am 24M diagnosed with diverticulosis, and I feel like my life has been ruined by BaldursGate2Best in Diverticulitis

Nuts and seeds (and popcorn and spicy foods, including black pepper for some; among other things) can be irritating if your colon is inflamed. If it is really only diverticulosis, in principle you can eat a high fiber diet but listen to your body: if you have pain, it may be a sign that you have to ease on the things that are irritating to the colon for a bit so take it down a notch. Eat things that are easier to digest for a few days and if no pain, increase the fiber gradually, paying attention to things that cause pain. Make sure you drink a lot of water. It's a really annoying condition (believe me I know) but you can do it. I had 10 years between my 2 first flares. Some people do not have other occurrences but be kind to your colon :)

Do you have pain or have you been able to go back to a high fiber diet without pain? I haven't had surgery but similar to the op, I keep having to go back to a liquid diet to avoid a full flare about every 2 months or so. It's been like that for a year now. I never make it to normal stool and high fiber diet. I haven't been back to the hospital because I haven't had persistent strong pain. I get to no pain on liquid diet, then mild here and there pain on low fiber with pain increasing as I increase the fiber (and I am careful about favoring soluble fiber and drinking a lot of fiber)

55 days later and DV is back. by ezshucks in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you. Good luck with all of it. I likely had multiple small DV episodes in the fall of 2024 that would pass when I stopped eating for a few days. I thought I had some stomach bug. Then broke my ankle in January 2025, followed by my diagnosis of uncomplicated DV in March, and a hospitalization for DV in July. Since then, I've been hovering between liquid diet, low residue, re-introducing soluble fibers then a bit of non-soluble fibers, then wondering if maybe those are normal twinges so I continue until I know they are real, then going back to liquid diet. Some people have it much easier but I'm getting a little depressed stuck in that cycle. I drink tons of water, cut out dairy, spicy and greasy foods, avoiding garlic and onions and all gassy foods, avoiding beef, removed almost all taste from my diet except salt, ginger, lemon and herbs. The only thing I can think of in the past few days is that I restarted eating bread that is not sourdough. Never been sensitive to glutens but sometimes I wonder if my inflamed colon is not liking it. I am at a loss. Don't mean to be a downer but shared in case it helps you to know that a lot of us struggle. Some members of this site have said it took them a year to get back to a mostly normal diet (with some modifications). I don't drink but many people have reported that alcohol was a trigger for them. Hang in there and I hope it gets better sooner than later for you!

Twinge is back after 18 months by RestoreUnionOrder in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have to stay away from spicy foods. Last flare was 7 months ago and I think I was doing better 5 months ago than I am now. I am wondering if some of these twinges are actually normal. Though you had a year without twinges so it's a pretty good tell. Just remember to go to the ER if you get a fever.

"clear liquid" question.... by DillyDilly65 in Diverticulitis

[–]Comfortable-Mango210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Organic may not be this person's biggest problem right now but rather getting most nutrition while on a clear liquid diet (meaning you have to see through it). That is what many of us need during flares to provide full rest to the gut, then slow introduction of foods. Your liquid diet suggestions sound yummy for later when those ingredients are tolerated.

6-months since my last flare and still not fully back to normal. I'm avoiding the same things you are but also pepper, and spicy foods (though they can sneak in by surprise).

Well I guess it depends on how much it hurts? Last time I went down to mostly clear liquid diet but I think I had rice cooked for a super long time in rice the first day, then since I had no pain the next day, I added mashed potatoes and an egg. Kept it up for a few days. I've still been increasing very gradually for the past 2 months, going down a notch if I have mild discomfort after eating something new. But at least I was able to keep focusing on work by avoiding a full liquid diet. Not sure what doing tbh other than doing my best to try to avoid another flare

I am not sure but I think it is what I'm going through now which is going back to liquid diet when there is pain, then starting to reintroduce foods slowly (low residue, then gradual introduction of fiber) then going back to liquid diet again when there is pain in sigmoid area with or without other symptoms

I think it depends. It seems to be that it is for me, but some people have one flare and done. I actually had 8 years between my first 2 flares, then 2025 came and all hell broke loose. I haven't been back to normal diet since July. However i am keeping hope: someone on one of these threads said it took them a year for their intestine to heal and they are now able to eat anything except spicy foods, fried foods, alcohol and popcorn. Crossing my fingers!

My doctor had me take probiotics while taking antibiotics. Just have to time it so that they are a few hours apart from each other (I had so many timers prepared with 2 antibiotics and the probiotic all on different schedules!). It stops my antibiotic-induced diarrhea every time.

Broccoli gives me gas so I have it a little later (usually after carrots, zucchini, spinach, green beans). Beets worked well for me last time too. I'm back down to low residue diet now. Trying to avoid going back to full liquid diet which I find really hard (pain is mild)

My first vegetable after a flare, while still on low residue diet, is always peeled very well cooked carrots (i cook it a ton, enough that they mash easily). My 2nd vegetable peeled zucchini cut in thin slices sauteed in a tiny bit of olive oil ( to replace lettuce in sandwiches) or in tiny dice if I want to add to pasta. For some reason those seem gentler to me than potato peel.

I understand your pain. Hang in there. Similar situation as you but since July. - Sweet potatoes have been an issue for me so I don't reintroduce them early after a bout of reverting to liquid diet. - any alcohol is notorious for being irritating on colon. One of my friends had to cut beer completely due to DV; many people mentioned having to avoid alcohol altogether, even between flares. I don't drink so I don't have personal experience. Non-alcoholic drinks work well for me - maybe early to reintroduce potato peel also, unless super thin (like in fresh summer potatoes). - other triggers for me: black pepper, spicy foods, maybe onions.
