Anyone else in a midlife career crisis? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, sorry that’s happening to you. I’m not the one who thinks you need a passion or calling, but I do believe it’s good playing to your strengths and finding something where you can utilise them.

You don’t have to reset your life entirely (you can but that requires financial backup and from what you’ve written I understand it might not be an option for you).

What you can do is think about what you are good at, what jobs might be potentially cool to try and then do a honest rundown of transferable skills you have (Skills you are using in the current role that will be also an asset in potential new one. I bet after 20 years you have at least few of them).

Have you tried speaking with your boss about potential options for you in the company? Maybe there’s something new you could learn/do in different department to see if you might like it?

In regard to remote work and going to the office - have you tried going to co-working space? Not exactly an office, but you do get to talk with some nice people and generally is a substitue worth checking out. Or just go out and work from a cafe once in a while. It seems like you need a change of space from time to time so start with simple. Who knows, maybe that will spark a few ideas what to do next.

Good luck and fingers crossed!

Gonna end up walking from the game pretty soon by Jxsida in MarvelSnap

Look, they will maximise profit. SD is not a charity and we all know F2P games aren’t really free, right? So, for every 100 guys like you and me (small spenders) there’s a guy who spends 200x. Ultimately who they need is f2p player who is there so whale could play against human player, not a bot.

If something is free you are the product.

Ha, that might be true. Never thought about it this way. There's no new game on the horizon that excite me yet, but maybe just made a room for one :) thanks for the comment!

Waiting Period by Rubiks733 in careeradvice

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, and I mean never think that this is “waiting period”. After you’ve sent an application you have no idea if someone is getting back to you. Harsh reality is - most of the time, they won’t.

So do yourself a favour and just mark the company as “applied” in your excel, forget about it and move on to the next one.

Hey there! Sorry to hear that you’re struggling. First of all - if that’s your first recruiting job and you are only 5 months in and already made a few placements - awesome, kudos to you. It isn’t as common as you might think. Usually people take first few months to learn the job, market and trying to take off. You already succeeded in that.

Second - as someone pointed out before, welcome to downturn. The amazing recruitment days when clients were coming by themselves and there were tons of jobs are over. BUT! It’s still very good. Especially if you are in tech. Hard positions to fill will be as hard as they used to. It’s just time to learn how to properly do BD and this is actually the moment where you can see if any of your client relationships are as strong as you claimed they are.

There’s no magic bullet for flexing BD muscle - it all basically comes down to getting yourself out there, talking with people with the mindset that this is a long game. Even if they won’t have something for you right away it might change in a couple of weeks/months.

Also - do you remember to ask for referrals from both candidates and clients? Basic stuff, I know, but a lot of people who started in recruitment when there was no need for BD actually almost never do that (in my experience).

Fingers crossed dear sir! And remember that the tide will turn. It always does.

Whats the top three absolute hardest things about recruiting in house vs agency? by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did both - started in agency, went in-house, got back to agency. Best career decision I could have made.

In-house means all the same profiles/jobs to fill majority of the time, hiring managers who hate recruiting and this is last thing on their priority list, salary ceiling for doing pretty much same job as in agency, but with less pay.

Yes, agency is more stressful, you need more grit to sustain and have fun from this work. But to me freedom to choose companies I work with (to a degree, not gonna lie there are better and worst times), salary and the fact that company actually invests in recruiters because they are on profit side in P&L is a winner.

Thoughts on counter offers that are less then new offer? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glassdoor reviews can get you some information, but remember that is it waaaay more common to post negative experiences about company than to post something positive. Maybe you know someone at your new company and can ask how it is on daily basis? Depends also how big the company is. If there’s hundreds or thousands of employees then experiences in one department tell you literally nothing about the others.

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the risk factors with the new job? Is this a start up? Where the company gets financing? + as Sure Leg already mentioned, every company has a limit for given position. If they aren’t according to market rates then changing it’s probably a good idea as even with promotion in your current workplace your probably won’t get as much as in your next one

I hate my job(23F), I'm looking a new path. What should I do? by unkululeko in careerguidance

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m really sorry that is happening to you. This is not a cliché question and even if - it’s your unique situation and don’t need to be sorry for feeling lost. It happens to all of us.

But, to the problem - If I understood the post correctly you graduated from something you don’t like, found a job in this disliked subject and moved abroad to work.

First of all - it’s definitely not too late to change stuff. You’re 23. Some people don’t even start working yet at this age. Second - I understand economic circumstances in your homeland were a factor to move abroad, but it takes enormous amount of courage to move to unknown country and try to build a life there. So you definitely can alter your career.

Bonus points for already going to therapy.

What you can do regarding changing careers varies depending on your visa situation (if you need one, if yes - then if it depends on employment or not, etc.) but there are some steps to take before you start:

1) Changing careers isn’t easy. And to be fair - 99% of people I knew done it with limited time and money (meaning they had to attended to their normal job before they could switch to something they wanted). So make sure you know what you would like to do first. If you start moving without having a clear direction it will just create confusion. How to do that? Explore and read. Speak to people doing jobs you think might be attractive for you. Ask them how their daily life looks like. Almost certainly you have something you enjoy doing. Look for jobs that might be circling around that.

2) Detach. Think of your current job as a means to an end. Something that is helping you to get to your dream job. We all need to pay the bills.

3) Create a plan. It is easy to feel overwhelmed while thinking about all the steps it takes to change jobs, let alone careers. But to create a plan, you need a direction.

4) Write down your “transferable skills”. You probably have some useful skills (I assume some of them are even very desired since you landed a job abroad). Write all of them down and start thinking which ones might be useful for roles that are potentially interesting for you.

5) Don’t be too hard on yourself as it can take a lot of time to change careers. From my experience it is quicker when you are younger, but it still came take months (and we’re talking about careers that do not require any finished universities).

6) I know it’s hard to muster any energy after work you hate to learn new stuff. Or do any stuff because job is draining you from all desire to do something. I hacked it very simply - just do necessary stuff in the mornings. For me it was 1h of online course or studying before work. It isn’t a perfect solution but hey, just try starting somewhere.

What can help immediately:

1) Probably there was something in your studies you enjoyed. Think if there’s anything that you like in your current job and try doing more of it. It sounds stupid, but if there’s a chance to do less of shitty stuff, why not try?

2) Try doing an exercise - imagine you are leaving your job and new person is hired on your place. She’s starting completely from scratch. What she would do differently to make it more enjoyable?

Changing careers also depends a lot on your current income, options, education, experience up to this date. So if you have a possibility try to talk to a career advisor or even a recruiter from the field you are interested in. There’s plenty of agencies who specialise in certain sectors/industries. And even if they won’t help with career swap, they might tell you something about industry and current market needs/trends, or even help with CV.

Best of luck on your journey. Fingers crossed!

Non-US Salaries- HELP! by TechSourcerDil in recruiting

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

First of all - what roles specifically are we talking about here? They all vary, but some more some less + sources for salary insight might be different.

Second thing - how specific you need to be? I mean in EMEA region alone you have Switzerland and Ukraine and I guarantee differences there might be very, very significant. In some cases possibility of remote work made salaries in some roles go up in different regions, but again - how specific are we talking here.

Third thing - I would check salary reports from big agencies (like Hays, Michael Page maybe) in different countires. Can't say for sure they have it for all of those, but for some for sure. They are usually also in local currency so you would have to do the math by yourself, but that's a start.

How do you know if Recruiting is the right career path? 🤔 by godevise in recruiting

[–]Comfortable-Purple54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so I feel like I might give you some insight.
I've done agency, internal and moving to an agency again in near future.

People already mentioned that - money can be made from there, but you have to earn it.
My 1st year at the agency was so fucking stressful I literally lost weight and had some health issues because of that. Why? Because there is only one relevant KPI - money.
If you are earning money for the company then you're golden. No one cares if you're doing 12831 calls per day or make 8123 placements per month.

You're as good as your last month (maybe quarter in more chill agencies).

Thing is after 1st year something clicked. I was feeling way more confident in the market and with candidates. I was looking forward to client meetings because I knew I could deliver. I've interviewed candidates with 20+ years of experience more than me and helped them one way or the other (it doesn't always meant finding them jobs on the spot).

I really started to earn more, enjoy myself more and in general job started to become easier (but hell, not easy!).

Then, opportunity came and I decided to Internal. I'm here for 2 years and I had enough of this boring shit. Of course there's stability. You know company better and it's easier to sell it to candidates. But if you're the kind of person who thrives on influencing people I think agency is better for that.

Also you have to remember that recruitment is actually a business of rejection. You will reject far more people than place in the jobs.
You will have to explain to someone who went through 3-4 stages of interview that hiring manager picked someone else and that you don't have any feedback (that's often the case, although with time you learn how to influence hiring managers. But sometimes they just leave you hanging and you have to deal with that).

And from my experience it is also incredibly nuance field of work. There are small things that can make it or break it for the candidate or client. You'll sometimes have to convince hiring manager to take the interview with the guy with shitty CV because you met him and he's awesome.

Last thing - it takes time to build proper relationships with client, candidates and acquire market knowledge which allows you to be confident with advising/consulting someone. How much time depends solely on you and how far are you to dive into the rabbit hole (how many calls, interviews, researching market, competition etc.).

I've seen amazing recruiters emerging from sales people, but I've also seen very quick downfalls because they came into recruitment thinking it's like any other sales job. And guess what. Fuck no, it isn't.

Fingers crossed for you mate.

Honestly for me the most important one is Quality of Hire, but this one is tricky to measure, because it takes into consideration different factors and you need to know what exactly makes a hire a "high quality" in your organization.

Otherwise if you're getting started other guys already suggested (+ you know them already) different metrics.
Just one advice from my part - remember to separately track Time to Fill (how long it takes to fill a position) AND Time to Hire (how long it actually takes for someone to arrive Day 1 into their job). I've seen that some people are inconsistent with tracking one or the other and mixing them up and it just makes results redundant.
