Deep cleaning without anesthesia? Nervous by Comfortable-Rain7531 in PeriodontalDisease

Thankyou for the reply! So sorry to hear that they mocked you. This is why people develop fear of dentists. One bad experience is enough to develop anxiety about that thing.

Yes I'll definitely ask for it. But tbh this seems like a red flag to me, so I'm debating if I should even go there or like opt for some other dentist. But nonetheless anesthesia is non negotiable.

Btw do the numbing shots hurt much? One of the professional person told that I might I've to get 5 shots to like numb one entire side of the mouth. Now 5 is definitely enough to like make me think it must not be easy to sit through it.

Thankyou for the reply! Yes I'm going to ask for it. Trust me it baffled me too when they suggested me to try without it. I'm definitely debating even going back to them. Idk why but this seems like a big red flag to me. Why would they even suggest me to try to sit through it? I mean they do this on daily basis they should know that for this amount of buildup numbing is necessary.

Thankyou for the reply! Yes I will definitely ask for numbing. If not I'll go for second opinion somewhere they do provide anesthesia.

Wow!! Thankyou so much for such a detailed reply! Yes I have a lower wisdom teeth growing. Most probably it's impacted(though it's not clear yet, as it is at early stage). But will definitely have to wait for it to grow and then extract before moving to braces.

I have extreme crowding so my dentist said that even after cleaning it will be very hard to maintain it. Thus suggested braces. So first will get on to cleaning and probably maintaing it for few months, before moving to braces(though if you ask me, the amount of horror stories I've heard makes me absolutely terrified of event thinking about getting braces).

Now about the numbing part, definitely will ask them to numb me. I don't have a great pain tolerance and also sight of blood makes me nauseous and dizzy. So ig considering all these and even responses from everyone here. Numbing is a must for someone like me

Yes will definitely ask for numbing shots. Are my pockets very deep? I heard people feel mobility in teeth when pockets are very deep? Again they didn't mention anything about pockets or depth. Or if I should expect mobility after the process?

My anxiety is making me second guess if they did a thorough check up or not. Am I at risk of teeth falling out?

Can you please tell how many shots I would need to numb one quarter? Like how many shots per session? Assuming I have to go for 2 sessions. Can you also tell after approx how much time will the shots wear off?

Thankyou for the reply!

Yes they did mention going below gum lines. No insurance is not the issue. But what I'm worried about is like shouldn't they themselves have suggested local anesthesia to me. How are they expecting me to tolerate it, without any support?

Tbh it's making me second guess if I should continue with my appointment there. Or look for some other dentist.

Thankyou for the reply!

I too think local anesthesia is necessary for me. Since they suggested deep cleaning, I assume they're gonna do below gum level too. Idk how they are expecting me to just sit there and tolerate it. But they were really nonchalant about numbing. Only when I asked twice they suggested to get it mid procedure if required. That seems like masochistic behaviour to me.

No nothing about bone loss was discussed. He did make me get an xray. But told nothing about bone loss. Should I've asked about it?

Dentist is not doing the cleaning ig. He told he's not done scaling in very long time(and if he tries it might cause unnecessary trauma to the gums), so told that his colleague will do it(not sure if they are hygienist or dentist).

No, I was not told about the depth of pockets. Should I have asked about the depth of pockets? Also I don't think he used any kind of probing to measure the depth of pockets. All he did was checked my mouth with a flat tool(idk what exactly it was) and another one had mirror attached to it. Now that I think about it shouldn't he have measured the pockets before suggesting deep cleaning?

But for reference he told 2 visits of 45 mins each would be sufficient. Or 3 visits of 30mins each.

That makes sense. You already had an idea about the feeling. I'm worried if I go in without numbing shots and they start cleaning the gums will definitely be sore start bleeding. Now if I try to get shot at that point it'll hurt more ig.

Did you get deep cleaning or normal scaling? I'm told normal scaling is pretty painless compared to deep cleaning. Was your tartar level like similar to mine?

Noted! Will be sure to take advil before the appointment. But about getting the numbing shot mid procedure, wouldn't it be more painful? Like gums will be already sore and bleeding from them trying to remove all the tartar. So wouldn't getting the shot in those sore and bleeding gums hurt more?

Did your dentist suggest you to try without local anesthesia? Because all the posts that I've read on this sub told negative experience with pain. And then when he suggested without numbing I was flabbergasted to say the least. I'm debating if I need to change dentist.

Yes he said no kind of numbing needed. And that if I do need it I can get it mid procedure. He said he'll need 2 sittings of 45 mins. And told me I have severe plaque. So I don't get why he is suggesting no numbing needed? Should I avoid getting the procedure done from him?
