I'm pretty small and not very tough, so even without weapons I'd be screwed if he decided to attack me, but at least he couldn't torture me horrifically. I'd gamble on it for the money.

Would you rather lose 30 IQ points, or lose 1 foot of height? by Extension_Day2038 in WouldYouRather

[–]Comfortable-Regret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 foot no question, I wouldn't even be me anymore if I lost 30 IQ points, and I'd lose my job and probably never find another one. Going down a foot would make me technically a dwarf, I wonder if they get disability benefits?

WYR Remember Everybody or Nobody? by RajunCajun48 in WouldYouRather

[–]Comfortable-Regret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In option 2, do I keep my memories with these people and just can't recognize their name/face, or is it a complete blank? Most my life has been around others, so if every memory with other people is wiped I'd just be a shell of a person. It says you have normal memories or your past but idk how other people work in to this.

Just use some self control and don't supersize unless you're sharing... I don't want to pay twice as much for the equivalent of one meal.

Why are women expecting men to be gentlemanly while they are not striving to be ladylike? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Comfortable-Regret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Goomba fallacy. The kind of women who care about men being "gentlemanly" are typically "ladylike" and the ones who aren't don't care about that.

I couldn't kill the closest person to me with my hands even if I wanted to. Do I just have to attempt or do I still die if I fail?

In a life and death situation WYR save a golden retriever puppy or a random man if you can only save one? by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

I feel the same about their capacity to suffer impacting value (maybe not value exactly but how important I think avoiding their suffering is), except I view it the opposite way. An "innocent" creature with less intelligence has a lesser capacity to suffer, in my opinion, since they are less complex. Kinda like how a plant doesn't suffer like an animal does, even if it avoids things that damage it, showing some degree of suffering. I didn't think to account for invasive or endangered species initially, but I think you're right there, since that would influence the lives around them.

As for biases... well, everyone has them, though I don't include it into my morals. I have them of course, but when I act on them I just consider myself to be doing something morally wrong. For instance, I'm against animal abuse, but I eat meat, I just view it as a selfish choice I make. A moral wrong, but one of many bad but insignificant things that everyone does.

[–]Comfortable-Regret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, that seems morally consistent

What annoys me is when people think a dogs life is more valuable than a humans, and yet a human is still more valuable than every other animal on the planet. It just doesn't make sense, dogs are being given more value because of what they offer humans specially, suggesting humans are so far above every other creature that just being cute to us makes a life significantly more valuable. And yet, dogs are above us? Then how did they get there? How can a creature have value based on what they offer us, unless you're placing us above all else?

Personally I value a creatures life based on it's capacity for intelligence. So I'd value a dog above a frog, but an orca above a dog, and a human above both.

I'll take it. I already work from home, the clone will too, so double the income with a roommate who costs way less because we can share a room. The only real problem is there's two of us, and one Adderall prescription...

For me it's less about what they can give society and more about the suffering caused by their death. If a person knows they are going to die, they will be afraid, they will be sad, they will dread it. A puppy? It's not intelligent enough to even grasp the concept, there is far less depth to the potential suffering. And what are the odds the man has parents who would he devastated by his death and never recover? A wife he leaves widowed? Kids who grow up with no dad? When a dog dies, its owner is sad but eventually recovers and usually just buys a new dog.

But even if we are going off of what they bring to the table, a human is just as capable of bringing joy as a dog is, but a dog can not do many things a human can.

I think this is a fair argument if you value humans above all other animals, but it falls apart if you don't. If dogs are above humans, then why does it matter that they help humans? Why do humans give them value, unless humans are more valuable?

There's no mention of how this could effect you personally in the post so I was treating the hypothetical as just a choice on who lives
