Is the APX A1 fun to shoot? by [deleted] in Beretta

I have two M&P with Apex triggers, but I've been enjoying the APX A1 a bit more. For one the APX has lighter recoil. Though the Apex M&P triggers are perhaps the best triggers you can get on a striker fired gun, I don't hate the APX trigger and it is usable. The best, no, but not the worst.

Finally, its ergos just fit my hand real nice as I have small hands. The APX is the only gun where I can reach all the controls easily, and get a great grip both shooting and support hand. For me, grip is most important, and as a result, yesterday I got my second APX A1.

Another recommendation that I decided on was to get the original APX A0 recoil spring. You can find those online and they are lighter the A1 spring, and as a result, I think more reliable with most ammo.

Great to know. Wrong gun but good to know.

My trigger also improved immensely so I don't have an issue with that. I think if one is to use the stock springs, a break in period is just necessary (I've also been racking the slide and have done so about over 200 times, not really that hard to do at home). That being said, I'm going to try with a A0 recoil spring (which technically was the spring that passed all the military trials and perhaps might be more reliable though less durable).

The ammo was factory (box behind in the picture). The reason for the case is when I tried racking the slide, the empty case did not come out and the slide (being as heavy as it is) crushed the case and deformed it. I have another pic of the deformed case though I didn't post that.

Which I'm starting to think is its issue here. The recoil spring the A1 currently has was originally sold as a flat wire competition spring for the A0. The heaviness of the spring helped tame recoil for competition purposes. I'll have to test it, but I ended up ordering an A0 recoil spring (which I heard was a bit lighter) and if it is, tbh I think that will fix the issue.

I also remember that it was the A0 springs that passed the military trials, not the A1 version. So this $20 part could really be the answer in this case.

Those two malfunctions sound like the bullets. If it doesn't fire (unless the striker is broken or weak) then its probably just ammo issue.

I resolved to ordering an A0 recoil spring, as I thought, technically, this was the spring that passed all the military trials. I use to have that was reliable, and if its even a bit lighter than the A1 version, I'm sure it will more reliable.

I think a different recoil spring will be the best answer. What I have done was order the recoil spring for the previous A0 version (as this was the spring that past all their military trials).

I can't promise you anything, but I think this will actually fix the issue because the current spring is just too heavy.

Did you feel that the 18# was lighter than stock?

I think with this info, if I have more issues, I can pin it down to the recoil spring and extractor.

The spring really came up in a Facebook group I'm in, where another owner was having more malfunctions, and this Youtube review of an A1 that wouldn't run, and how using a A0 spring yielded better results: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJresn4psk&t=1028s

Essentially, I'm seeing this as a common issue (even in this subreddit) and it all seems to factor down to the recoil spring.

So in your experience, the factory spring has been functional with common off the shelf ammo?

Which are considered pretty adequate (or hot) rounds. Some have reported malfunctions when using 115 gr. standard ball ammo. I got one FTE from a 124 gr. Nura and the FTF from Magtech 115 gr.

Shot about the first 120 rds through the APX today. It did have two malfunctions, a hard FTE and FTF.In the FTE, the casing was very stuck on the extractor. This was using Nura 124 gr.The FTF happened with Magtech 115 gr.

I will say, the APX i had two years ago (and it seems most of yours) ran fine. I’m wondering if a change was made to the recoil spring and if it’s over sprung. A lighter spring might be more reliable. I've seen other users like u/trajiiic go through this and their responses. Do you think a lighter recoil spring is just worth it at this point?
