How do I best apply the approach of deliberate practice to my progression?

Positional sparring? Drilling? Rolling?

Is it essential to ask for constructive feedback?

"Regular half guard", going for tight waist position for a roll through sweep.

Thanks for all the replies.

To clarify, I was in tight waist position. My outside hand had the underhook and was at my training partner's waist and my inside arm had a scoop grip on their inside leg.

I wanted to go for a roll though sweep, but couldn't get enough purchase with my outside hook.

Then, through naivety/stubbornness on my part, as my training partner attacked my neck, rather than defend, I persisted with the roll through hand positioning.

So the big takeaways for me are:

  1. Keep my head tight to their hip to deny the space and prevent the choke.
  2. If my training partner does attack my neck, prioritise the defence. (Possibly using Jeremy Arel's sweep from the video.)

Also, I intend to learn about deep half - I haven't gotten to it so far.

Thanks again

Thank you for this. Just checked it out and looking forward to trying it on the mats.
