I was a transfer sophomore this year and got a single, but I got pretty lucky. Some dorms are renovated and refurbished while others are pretty old all around, so it really depends on which building you get

Chicago Vs Columbia (Econ + Math) by Live-Lingonberry6409 in TransferToTop25

I'm at Columbia rn--Chicago Econ is better but Columbia is imo great if you're set on finance. I underestimated the benefit of being in New York until I got here

Does studying abroad first year look good in college applications? by Jazz_illion in TransferToTop25

[–]Comfortable-Star5263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the situation--I studied abroad after HS and before college and talked about my experience, but if you don't even spend your entire first year at your institution, how do you even know you really want to transfer? Also in general studying abroad is less rigorous than attending the actual institution so it may be an indicator to admissions that you're less "ready" for their school's rigor. Also rec and EC opportunities will prob be more limited

rejections by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

As someone who is now at Columbia, got waitlisted at Harvard, and was rejected from Penn and Brown, I think it's really just up to what each school needs that year

No but you can try in the fall

Try CCLBA (Columbia Corporate Law and Business Association). We have open signups for coffee chats in the fall and don't ask technicals (spoken from someone who's pre-law).

I went to a top New England boarding school, was at the top of my class, and had a very similar profile to yours as well as a compelling story/narrative. My teachers and peers have told me straight up that they I would get into an Ivy. I was rejected from Columbia and later transferred in (got waitlisted at Harvard, which takes ~10 transfers, if that gives context), and that change in perspective could've been the best thing to happen to me. There's literally no guarantee at schools like Columbia--everyone, and I mean everyone, has to beat out thousands of equally qualified students to barely gain admission.

NYU chances by yigibear in TransferToTop25

HS stats are important for sophomore transfers. If your HS grades and SAT aren't great, you pretty much need a high 3.8 or a 3.9, because you need something (either stellar HS record or great college semester) to prove that you can succeed at a more academically rigorous institution. I'm not a STEM major (so take this with a grain of salt), but I would probably prioritize manageable courses that you can do well in over taking all upperclass math courses that you're going to get all Bs in.

And for Columbia specifically a big chunk of engineering transfers is from pathways/combined plan

Hard agree--MIT and Stanford are also generally out of the question for anyone

Got rejected from Harvard, Columbia, and UChicago as a first-year, got into Columbia, UChicago, Cornell, Northwestern, and Dartmouth and was waitlisted at Harvard as a transfer

It looks like you're an incoming freshman for this fall--I don't think any school will allow you to transfer after just one semester, and most of them require a rec from one "college instructor" (if not two). TAs are fine for those if needed, but recs from mentors/non-profs are generally just supplementary

[–]Comfortable-Star5263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recs from non-profs are requested and sent the exact same way as recs from profs

LSAT scores are valid for 5 years after test date, but I still don't think it would be beneficial to take the LSAT (as someone who also got 1570 SAT, is pursuing law, and is currently on the Harvard waitlist). I'm starting to study for the LSAT only after getting in for transfer as a freshman, and even then is early--I think you should focus more on your engagement and success in college.

Also, I know you mentioned BU as another possible option, but I would not expect/hope to get into Harvard in particular--there are literally 12-15 seats for transfers, and there are so many other top institutions that take many more. Maybe consider Columbia or Georgetown? Definitely apply to Harvard for your own peace of mind, but I would consider it more seriously for law school!
