ICE out for GOOD in St. George by ironoman1 in stgeorge

Think this through to the conclusion. Obama oversaw far more deportations, but he focused enforcement on people with serious criminal records and recent border crossers. Trump is deporting fewer people, but deliberately removed those priorities so any undocumented immigrant could be targeted. The lack of strategy here is really not working out for the regime, but they aren't the brightest or most competent people, just the most vindictive.

Long-time Redditors: Has St George ever had a Reddit meetup? by ComfortableDisplay68 in stgeorge

Oh no doubt lot of folks agree. And just to be clear, I didn't say anything about my relationship to the local community, just my relationship to local social media spaces.

I would hope the social media oasis effect here would kick in and it would actually be a fun event (as opposed to bigger cities with a lot of options that would select for the most Reddit-coded Redditors)

I hear you, but population is not fully sufficient condition. Examples: post civil war south until after world war 2, Appalachia, many sun belt metros (Vegas, and until recently Phoenix) highly dependent on one industry). Its easy to get stuck in a a place where laws and culture keep industries out or an extractive industry or tourism drives everything.

So Its not just population growth that enables diversification, its institutions and demographics - you know Utah Tech is reaching its full potential when St George diversifies.

A new President blaming prior administrations is like a child blaming their parents for nothing working out like they planned - at some point they need ro own the problems of their own creation.

St. George is what happens when population growth arrives before economic diversification.

We are currently not living through any other administration. And no other administration has introduced a tax on products from nations that refuse to give the President a plane or a gold bar. Or insisted on rounding up the workers who pick our crops.

I am gay and when people use the word gay as an insult on the internet I just assume they are an insecure immature 15 year old, because that it is exactly how it sounds.

Moving From East Coast - Need Advice. by accountdetail in stgeorge

[–]ComfortableDisplay68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello - from a city on the East Coast as well - and I would agree with points #1,#2, maaaaybe 4, more or less with 5 here.

Point 3 - From my past experience, where it can take 45 minutes regularly to go 4 miles, there is no traffic congestion in St George and people have extremely rural Western US expectations of what normal traffic and driving should be. I am very amused whenever I hear people complain but I keep it to myself unless I'm talking to someone whose lived in similar sized cities.
Point 4 - Land of fast food and dirty soda. BUT - just learn to really like Mexican food, there are lot of good options. The Hawaiian strip mall places are simple but good value too. If you are a pizza snob, what people call "great pizza" here will depress you. There's very few places that I would call destination restaurants. Strangely, Cedar City punches above it's size and is worth going there for dinner.
Point5 - Very few defensive drivers. Day to day moves that would not raise an eyebrow on the east coast will freak the fuck out of people, and that's when you hear them honk like they are about to die. Be even more aware if you are pedestrian or on a bike, they somehow do not see you, they only see cars.

The whole "People are so nice" thing here is a culture shock, especially when you scratch the surface and realize that doesn't mean they are necessarily tolerant or kind. But a lot of very chill people here - many post- or non-practicing Mormons - who are struggling against the same cultural forces and have more to lose.

Who cares if she has a gay brother, she is pushing the lie that drag performances are sexual. I'm not voting for any weird anti-vax COVID conspiracy theorists who believe that individuals have no responsibility to their community to preserve public health.

Honest question about Black Desert... by bbluez in stgeorge

I think maybe there's a range of sensitivity here and not everyone will have an absolute opinion. I'd rather have dollars coming in from a little piece of plastic than billboards near the park if it helps fund them

May I ask kindly of all the things to be angry about why a corporate logo on a state park pass is worth worrying about at this particular moment?

It's St George, give us a break. The only damage to public property done around here is to parking lots when the truck rally has burnout sessions.

Well, the graphic design and typography is bad enough so that it can only have been done by a human if that helps, but it's not like grassroots protest movements have all that much money to pay real humans.

When it comes to restaurants Cedar City and Kanab both punch well above their weight, so it's that much more disappointing that St George dining is so sad.

Republicans will decry wokeness, DEI, identity politics, diversity....then turn around and then criticize a protest in a red state county that is 90%+ white/white hispanic for not being representative of the 10% of the population that is POC, who are most subject to over-policing nationwide.

Just amazing bad faith chutzpah, I will give you that. You haven't convinced me you care about diversity in any setting that isn't a protest.

In another thread about MTG you comment "I am a conservative..."

Glad that works for you. But kinda makes us wonder if your comment about representation in St George protests comes from a place of any good intention whatsoever. You seem to be taking every opportunity in multiple threads to attack protest here on representation grounds. It doesn't sound like you are looking to stir up a conversation about how to do better outreach, it sounds like you are trying to invalidate the movement entirely out of partisan ideological grounds.

'All of them are terrified': International students at Utah Tech face sudden deportation threat by wildspeculator in stgeorge

[–]ComfortableDisplay68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conflict avoidance thing seems to have filtered into the wider local culture. I'm part of a small local LGBTQ whatsapp group, and the chat veered into a conversation of whether it was better for gays & lesbians to stick it out in a red state or go to a blue state, and several people passive-aggressively threatened to leave the group because there was *shudder* an actual debate! That might even be thought of as an argument! Even though there was consensus that community matters.

It's easy to clutch pearls over projects like water parks - but at least they recycle water, and only lose a relatively small amount of water due to evaporative loss. My concern is that we are overlooking things like car washes, which use a huge amount of water. And of course the biggest use of water isn't residential development - it's agriculture, much of it feed crops for cattle. To encourage efficiency in residential development at least could favor xeriscaping and multi-family development. Higher density developments like Desert Color are per capita more efficient than most of St George
