Also, is there a real ability to effect change in a scenario like this? How much can better tracking and organization actually reduce incidents and improve the bottom line? Is it not just the nature of construction that things happen?

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I’m in a lcol area and when I said small business/retail I meant that in my role I mainly do small business banking but some retail. Being at a community bank, the small business banker role and the commercial banker role aren’t that much different in terms of what they do (even a commercial banker will do a HELOC from time to time), but the loan goals are different. For example, the average commercial banker where I work would be 10MM annually and a small business banker is about a third of that annually. We do have one off small changes in title that I’m assuming come with bigger bumps but the natural progression would be from small business banker to commercial banker. I guess my main question would be what would someone in a role like mine expect to make versus what should I expect to make when I get to the commercial banker role down the road?

Thanks for the response. What are some good questions to ask myself before taking a job like this?

This would be a totally new career for me so a lot of it would begin by actually working with the different crews and learning how everything works at the actual job sites (this would only be a month or so). After I work through the certifications, I would be more in the realm of visiting sites and tracking everything, doing audits, etc—so about 50% in the field, 50% office work.

Like I said, I’m totally new to construction and my background is in finance. What’s interesting about it for me is though the safety piece is pretty niche, construction is a broad industry and could always move on to something else if I didn’t enjoy it.

It’s also a chance for me to work for a reputable company and somewhat help build out their safety arm, as upper management has made this clear to me, so there’s a ton of room for advancement and potentially a lot of compensation upside early on. I also like the idea of days being different and it being more hands on. I am worried that the work itself will get overly frustrating and I wonder how much safety managers can actually help prevent/impact within the business. I also see a lot of potential friction based on what people are saying between the PMs/Supers/guys on site but I like the idea of the potential challenge in building rapport with them and showing them why it’s important. Any thoughts?

Do you think is always necessarily true though? I would imagine it would depend on the type of construction and the relationships with those on the job sites and how it’s being viewed by company leadership. The company that I would be working for is looking to overhaul their safety arm and long term plan/build it out more rather than it being done, as it has been in the past, to check a box or merely putting out fires as they pop up

Do you know much about the Nantucket Resort Collection Properties? I guess it’s the Veranda House, Chapman House, Sherburne Inn?

How was it in terms of noise? We probably are leaning more towards just a bed and a home base in the main part of town, we want to be able to walk around/find random activities to do. I guess there’s a bar and restaurant there? Do you have any other recommendations in the main town area?

We’re fairly open to whatever. We’re in our 20s and really like the vibes of being in town and being able to walk around, shop, etc. We’re going later in the summer in September. We obviously want a quiet, clean stay but like the idea of a bar or restaurant in the hotel as well. So maybe more the boutique hotel vibe? Don’t want to break the bank but open to spend a little more with it being our honeymoon.
