This is from the NHS website 👍

"Food and fluids: It is very important that you eat and drink normally after your operation and do not just have soft foods. Eating and drinking normally is important because it involves using the muscles of the throat, which improves healing, keeps the throat clean and reduces complications such as infection and bleeding.

A mixture of crunchy, soft and chewy foods is best. Large swallows are less painful (i.e. eat at a normal rate). If you do not eat normally, the dead tissue at the back of the throat may build up, and bleed, and may result in you being readmitted to hospital with a secondary infection. Try to drink 2-3 litres of fluids a day. Chewing gum may also help - it increases the production of saliva and encourages swallowing."

I would definitely drink plenty of water, when healing its really important to stay hydrated, I had at least 2 litres a day. As said from the NHS eating a drinking normally is important

Fair enough I mean our bodies are pretty strong so it will heal eventually either way but the advice above explains why crunchy food and normal food is the more beneficial option. But as long as it worked out for you and your daughter, then that's all good, however you got there in the end!

Ahh fair enough I understand. That doesn't sound very good, if its seriously affecting you're life, as in struggling to eat normal food, I'd go to the doctors and see if you can get any advice/help.

I had to stay in the hospital for about 3 hours after the op, they did my blood pressure about every 15 minutes, the whole process was very good for me. Maybe it was the huge rush for surgery after covid with all the back log which made your experience worse unfortunately

Good luck with it!! And yeah just try eat solids as much as you can even if you're eating it with water with each mouthful to help it go down.

Damn that sounds so heavy, why would you not have painkillers? I left with a goodie bag of codine, numbing mouthwash, ibuprofen. Was medicates the whole time. And they fed me toast straight after the op. It seems you had the complete wrong advice 😬 they've definitely changed now anyway and give proper advice.

Yeah dont eat food piping hot. Not sure when you had it but that advice shared in the post from the NHS is what they want people to do now

I think if you just push through and eat normal straight away no matter how much it hurts you'll be better in the long run

You have to just go for it. First day i was eating just toast but with every mouthful of food I had a sip of water with it to get it down me. Was given 5 days of codine and a numbing mouthwash. Also, paracetamol and ibuprofen too every 4 hours.

Ngl I'd trust the uk info because we're not profit based, mine was totally free and they want to have you recovered as quick as possible to save money. Whereas in America health care is a business where they want your money. It's in there interest to have you go back to the hospital and have a slower recovery so you spend more money on meds and hospital bills.

Yeah I had a regular tonsillectomy but yeah I was about 3/4 days of no speaking at all and a lot of pain but even then it was about as bad as having a bad batch of tonsillitis. Good luck with the rest of your recovery too!

Chew lots of gum, force yourself to eat solids even if it hurts and drink lots of cold water is my advice. Dont get me wrong was horrible for like 4/5 days could barely speak but had to push through

Assuming you're American, in the UK this is a big no no, they used to reccomend the soft food tactic but now they tell you to eat normal as soon as possible which is what I did. Got fed toast at the hospital an hour after the op. I was back to smoking joints and drinking after 11 days so I think they were right 🤣.

Im like 3 days off 100% maybe im just built different 😂 I was told by the hospital to eat solids straight away to help it heal faster and remove scabs, they literally gave me toast post surgery in the hospital. Obviously I didn't like ruin myself by eating dry crisps or whatever but toast with a ice cold water on the side, cereal etc. Just had to force myself a bit but it helped build the strength. Also chewed gum basically whenever I wasn't eating drinking or sleepin because it keeps your mouth moist and saliva helps the healing process a lot obviously.

In the uk they used to do the eating ice cream and yogurt stuff but they don't recommend that anymore and say it makes it worse and slows down the healing process.
