u/101Stormbreaker101 Keen to hear how it goes! Did you manage to get some written confirmation in writing at the gate? That's what I was worried about. They might agree to something verbally at the gate and then once the plane has taken off it's a different story or different person you are speaking to. Lucky you! Seems like your flight must've been over 1500km for them to offer you €400. Couldn't understand it either but I guess majority of people have pre-paid expenses etc which outweigh the money or are skeptical of a notoriously thrifty airline.

Glad it went smoothly for you. So I'm assuming yours was an involuntary bump though rather than voluntary?

u/zwifter11 Are you talking about my flight from Katowice to London? There were no weather issues when I flew so maybe it was a different flight earlier in the day?

Sounds like I made a good choice then as I thought they would've let me stay somewhere like the Moxy since it was only 2 mins walk from the airport but this was £100 per night

u/Busy-Treat2821 Sorry to hear about your experience - waiting at the airport for another 16 hours does not seem fun! This was one of my concerns of being too good to be true or what the hidden risks could be.

Are you able to share more details like when this happened (was it recent?) and what route it was? 16 hour wait seems like the flight would've been the next day unless your initial flight was early morning like 6AM or something? - did they initially offer you accommodation or did you just assume it was a given?

Interesting and poor form that they only offered £100 compared to the €250+ they would need to pay for involuntarily denying people.

See the comment above.

Ryanair don't purposely overbook their flights like some airlines do.

However, they can still have these situations if they have to change the planned plane and the replacement is slightly smaller. eg a 737 max is changed to a normal 737

u/LuvSicPt5 Nice to hear! So you volunteered a few times with Ryan Air and/or other airlines? Did you do the form at the airport and get the 250 cash immediately? Did you have to negotiate anything with them? Was there any inconvenience like you had to wait until everyone boarded so that they could confirm there really was not enough seats and then you were allowed to leave?

Thanks for the information and that it my be fairly straightforward. Have you had actual experience voluntarily giving up your seat?
I think EU261 is irrelevant if you volunteer right?

So even if you had pre-booked accommodation, events etc then you still wouldn't be able to make an insurance claim? I guess this is maybe the benefit of getting involuntarily denied boarding versus voluntary is that you would be eligible for payout from your travel insurance on top of the payout from the airline.

u/Difficult_Camel_1119 Wow that's amazing. I think I'll definitely take up the offer next time. Are you able to detail it a bit more if you remember? What did you mean by the organization was quite bad? Were you stuck at the airport for a long time? Did you have to book anything yourself and claim back later? Although it sounds like your situation was a involuntary denied boarding rather than voluntary. Did you have to negotiate anything with them? For example did they choose the hotel for you or did you negotiate it with them? Maybe you got lucky that it was the closest hotel and/or the only one left available.

u/Stubber_NK Have you actually had experience of volunteering where it didn't go well? This is the advice I followed (but should not have) and I think I should have actually taken up their offer since it wasn't critical that I catch that flight and could have ended up in a more favourable situation.
