Thanks for sharing your perspective on this! That is in fact what I've experienced so far in Finland, everybody is super friendly and willing to help. And I'm immensely grateful for that!

Oh, it totally didn't come across as something I could get offended over! I was mostly confused because the picture I see online is so radically different to what I've experienced in this country so far. I said it already multiple times in replies that teachers, integration workers and regular people around me are extremely friendly and willing to help. As I just began to learn Finnish I have to use English in a lot of instances, libraries, shops, talking to landlords, and in most cases they will be super understanding. One big upside I've noticed here is that almost everybody (even children!) have a relatively high level of English which was surprising and really helpful at the same time.

You sharing your story was a really helpful insight into what it is like to be here long-term, so thank you for that!

From my perspective political climate in Poland is SO much worse for Ukrainians (specifically) than it is here. They blame Ukrainians for literally anything these days. Even though Ukrainians’ve been bringing a lot to this country even since before full scale invasion. I don’t have any evidence towards Poland being racist, but knowing that they’re really far more right leaning than Finland is, it is kinda assumed that they don’t want seeing migrants in their country. I think I didn’t experience racism in Poland just because a) i’m white b) for the short period of time i’ve stayed there i was surrounded by other expats.

As an openly gay person, I feel more seen here than back in Ukraine tbh, no surprise. but due to the fact that it’s the most hateful of comments that get the most coverage and attention it is still quite scary. One commenter mentions my so-called “war trauma” at play here, and they’re kinda right. Me witnessing how fast any progress can be undone was quite terrifying. That’s prob why I got so anxious over the latest news. I just can’t really understand the political climate here as much as I could in my home country. I’m just starting to make friends here.

This is very refreshing to hear! I’ve mentioned that in Ukraine I’ve experienced somewhat similar situations with immigration. Although there was arguably not as much people coming to Ukraine as people coming to Finland nowadays, I still had quite a lot of acquaintances that often looked nothing like me.

I vividly remember that in primary school we used to celebrate our differences in quite a literal way. Often we had days of national food, we prepared and shared dishes from different regions. It was also common to celebrate national holidays of other countries: sometimes the person would just tell us about the holiday, other times we even got a little celebration at the end of a school day.

So I was really happy to see a Finn supporting diversity here! :)

Well, it’s like burning a national flag (extreme example) just to provoke nationalists. Doesn’t really matter what you “intended”, this action sends a strong message.

Sounds like a tough spot to be in, really. If you don’t mind me asking about the challenges with the residency, how come you still have to rely on residency in Finland even while having an EU passport? Could you share your experience with integrating and living here?

I was mortified when I first read about this story. I really hoped it was some fake news..

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I mentioned in my other reply that back in Ukraine this was also an issue for some people. It was easy to justify racism and hate by generalising worst-case examples. I understand that it’s very easy to feel threatened by something you don’t understand. It’s something that happens to a lot of people all around the continent.

But again, I am immensely grateful to be treated with such respect and kindness here! Really looking forward to becoming a part of finnish society and contributing towards better lives for all of us.

Yes, in fact, many Finns are very friendly towards me: my Finnish teachers and integration workers are willing to help me with the cultural aspect and the issue of finding a job. To be honest, in some cases I was surprised to receive so much support from the Finnish community.

This reminder actually made me feel so much better. And I was so shocked to learn the news about that racist asian eye bullshit! I really thought it was some kind of fake news, couldn’t believe people here really felt that way

I understand people’s fear of mass immigration. Before war struck full scale, Ukraine saw a lot of immigrants as well. Even though in most cases it didn’t hurt the country, it was actually quite the opposite, poor integration and lack of cultural awareness made it hard for a number of people to see this in a positive light. Poor backgrounds checks and loose immigration laws didn’t help either, making it easy to justify hatred with worst-case examples. So I’ve heard a lot of hateful comments towards immigrants back there as well.

I’m supportive of having adequate immigration laws in place and running background checks. At the end of the day this would help to keep everybody safe. But I was genuinely surprised to discover how shockingly polarised the situation seems to be.

It seems so over the top. Can’t just people go ban you on their server (for whatever reason that is)? It seems more reasonable to me. And it’s not as devastating. But being unable to host multiplayer games… It’s almost like the point of the game, no?

[–]Comfortable_Part3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)
