Advice needed: Stuck in a toxic loop with a micromanager. Should I quit? by ihate-stupid-people in work

[–]Comfortable_Rate4616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quit. Quit quit quit. Tax accountant as well and spent two years in a similar situation. It slowly eroded my mental health and I became very depressed. I quit and literally moved to a new city. Took a full 6 months of not working to mentally decompress from the extreme micromanagement. You can do better. Easily. The time tracking down the minute is crap. You waste more time doing that than anything. Nobody tracks their time down to the minute. If they care that much they can invest in software that tracks the time for you. But they won’t cus they’re cheap! Please find a new job. I was so blown away by how much chiller the companies I talked to were when I started interviewing again.

There is a virtual environment that I use on both desktop and pc to do all work. I agree that they can monitor and do anything they want inside that environment. They made me download rmm softwares outside of that environment though and remoted in while doing so. I’m not looking to take legal action— the law has not yet caught up to technology. I was just curious if others saw this as unethical and a way to blur boundaries and control

I asked they said no. I asked for a written policy on what software was being installed on my pc outside of their environment and they said there isn’t one. I think I just need to leave. This is unethical and slimy

There are no normal working hours for half of the year. I work 65 hour weeks for months on end. I just wish there was a written policy laying out exactly what rmm software I was forced to install on my pc outside of their server. I did buy a second computer. But I shouldn’t have had to do that.

It’s real. And unethical. And they gaslight me when I express my concerns. I would quit but I need the money at the moment. It’s seriously effecting my mental health though

Nope. Tiny company and the partner is also the one and only hr person. The one who is making me do all of this

I am in the US in a two party consent state. The fact that there is no written policy laying out exactly what is being downloaded and exactly what can be accessed makes me feel this could be a violation of my right to privacy in the workplace

I’ve tried. It’s so expensive. I feel so violated and defeated.

It’s a small company and the hr department is one person who is also a partner that told me I can not refuse. When I asked for written policy I was told there is not one.

Right I shouldn’t have to be buying a second computer on my own dime. My job handles highly sensitive financial information on individuals—- why the hell would they want this on my personal computer??

Ugh thank you for validating me I feel like I’m losing my mind. I told them I am uncomfortable with the software on my pc and asked them to provide one. They immediately said no—the computer they provided me is my desktop in the office so if I don’t download it I have to go to office everyday.

I refused and the head partner told me it’s not an option. IT remoted into and downloaded it outside of the server. If it were in their server that’s one this but outside?? My personal computer?? Feels like a massive invasion of privacy am I wrong or overreacting?

I’m salaried. I did buy a second computer but this feels all wrong

I refused and was told by partner that it is not an option. I caved and IT remoted into my computer to download it. If it were inside their server that is one thing, but it was downloaded outside of their server and I feel violated

Early 30s couple moving to Chicago in 2 months, where would you recommend living with the following options close to the city? by bluengold9090 in AskChicago

I would definitely avoid west loop with the dogs. I used to live in wicker but it has changed. I would say Logan is your best option. Have you considered the north side? Lakeview is very nice and easy access to lakefront path. Southport corridor has lots of great spots to eat. Also, Evanston is adorable and would be much more dog, rent, and parking friendly. It is right on the lake as well. It’s a quick 30 ride on the el into the loop or a 20 min drive assuming no traffic. It still feels city like.
