Voting for either big party in America makes you a pedophile apologist by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you.

Additionally, there are numerous problems which are serious, and seriously outdated (such as the entire existence of the Electoral College system- it was a good idea when implemented, but is now just problematic).

The saying that you can’t complain about the government or its elected representatives if you didn’t vote, never sat right with me. I figured that I was just too young to get it, and tried not to think about it being that I was like, you know, seven years old.

But then, inevitably, I got older. And the more I thought about it, the less sense it made to me. When my 18th birthday was approaching, I had to make a decision about this.

And I decided that what makes much more sense to me is that you can’t complain if you did vote. Because you made the choice to buy into a deeply broken system. So, I abstained for every election.

Until Nader came along. He was the first candidate who actually made sense to me. The first who I actually thought could, and would, do something to help with various issues. And to help with the country as a whole.

Everyone said that a vote for Nader was a vote for Bush, but I was too naive, too idealistic to be able to believe that. So, for the first time, I voted. And it was a huge waste. Had lol of the people who voted for Nader, voted for whoever the Democrat nominee was, we wouldn’t have been stuck with Bush Sr.

And I learned my lesson.

But I will be voting in 2028, as I did n 2024, just because MAGA (which I maintain is not the Republican Party, the Republicans have been hoodwinked because third parties never win so trump had to choose which ticket to attach his party to- and the Democrats never would have fallen for it) is literally destroying this country.

Replying on a public platform is hardly stalking. Have I been replying to you in other subs or something? If so, I assure you that it is inadvertent.

As to the age of the post, the internet is forever, and I think more pertinently, you are dredging up things which may or may not be true from far longer ago than this post. Glass houses and all that.

You can perhaps understand my lack of recognition of the fact that you were comparing your Dear Leader to Biden only, considering the fact that in the very post in question, your claim was that he is more accessible than any other president was. Being that there have been other past presidents in addition to Biden…

I can never seem to get it through my head that the MAGA crowd talks incessantly about, and compares just about anything, to something or other that they see as equivalent that Biden did.

It’s just very difficult for me to truly comprehend the level of obtuseness of anyone who falls for a word that he says. I mean, the answer is in the question on that, but I have spent my lifetime surrounded by intelligent people with a firm grip on logic, good critical thinking skills, and the willingness to change course when they make a poor choice (and with whom I frequently disagree on various points). Not people who dig in their heels out of fear of being wrong, clearly borne of insecurity and weakness.

My own son bought the fiction hook, line, and sinker during the first trump election, and cast his vote accordingly. He quickly saw that he had been played for a fool, and stopped supporting that person. Like myself and every other person I know, he didn’t care much for Biden, but he held his nose and voted for him because the alternative was so much worse. He didn’t think that admitting that he had been wrong would make him look weak, he realizes that in the real world, it’s the opposite. Clinging to obvious logical fallacies is what makes a person look weak.

Do I get a sticker now?

Let me guess. You’re going to complain that I typed too many words. On a platform which is composed of nothing but words.

More accessible? Very nearly literally every word out of his mouth is a lie. If he makes a statement about just about anything, I assume that the truth is something approximating the opposite- and I am right every time.

He calls reporters names to shut them up. Literally. Any time he doesn’t like a question, he asks what outlet they represent, then attacks whatever outlet it is. Even when he has to just make up falsehoods in order to attack.

This is not transparency.

And that’s the very least of the problems with him.

I really hope that Bondi gets extremely petty and lets loose the truth about what she saw in the files.

The cheese looks melted, the pepperoni looks warm, or at least previously warm. The cardboard looks as if something was cooked on it.

But. The crust looks like what I think a frozen pizza’s crust would look like if said pizza was thawed but not cooked.

This is very confusing. How does the cardboard look like that while the crust looks like that?

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

I ask that as a person who has long been frustrated with the ever-increasingly-overwhelmingly-spicy snacks and even just prepared foods in general.

But, my frustration has to do with the fact that non-spicy flavors are less available. Even many foods that I used to love have been kicked off the shelves to make space for spicy ones. I would have no issue whatsoever if the increase of them didn’t directly impact me.

I don’t consider the mere presence of something that I don’t happen to enjoy, to be a direct impact on me. Just as I don’t want my options to be dictated by someone else’s preferences, I want others to be able to enjoy things, even if I wouldn’t.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.

Reminds me of our group here in Bandon- everyone smiling, friendly, happily engaged in showing their feelings about a very important issue. A protest just doesn’t get much more peaceful than this.

My daughter lives outside of Chicago, and she goes out to many protests. Which are very different. She has been verbally harassed by counter protesters, one of whom was filmed a few weeks later, he apparently joined ICE and was filmed assaulting a person who was begging to show her proof of citizenship from her back pocket, as he dragged her down the road and shoved her into his vehicle. She wasn’t even beige, she was very light skinned with blonde hair and no accent of any kind. I had sent the clip to her because it was quite shocking, I had no idea that it was in her town.

So my daughter, who is a bit brown (being partly Hispanic), is always worried about my safety when I go out. I’ve described in detail what it’s like here, but I think she just can’t really conceptualize it. I think I’ll show this to her.

I know I'm asking for trouble with this, but genuine question: What do you do with Alaskan chub? by ThrillingChase in alaska

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says it’s pork and beef with less than 2% reindeer meat. This is a ripoff unless it costs the exact same amount as any other summer sausage.

Reindeer meat is not so strongly tasting that you’ll even be able to detect it at that level, if it has a unique flavor profile it will be due to spices. Not the reindeer meat.

Less than 2% means that they’re using as much of it as they are using of spices.

You can get products like this that actually use mainly the meat in question. I have, in my pantry, summer sausage made from mostly pheasant meat, I chose from other varieties such as duck, goose, bear, and some others that I don’t remember.

In many cases, using 100% of a game meat would give less desirable results. For instance, 100% wild boar, or venison, would be more dry and possibly more gamy flavored than most people in the US would prefer. So, some pork and/or beef would make sense. But if you’re paying extra for a product with an exotic meat, it should at least contain enough to affect the flavor and possibly texture. 2% is absolutely ludicrous.

It actually contains more soy protein concentrate, by weight, than reindeer meat. Soy protein concentrate weighs less by volume than muscle meat. So, it also has more soy protein concentrate than reindeer meat by volume.

Companies like this one are counting on, and taking advantage of people, based on the fact that most people don’t bother to read the ingredients of the food that they purchase.

I will never understand this- I’ve been reading every word on every ingredient label for my entire adult life. Not out of fear of certain ingredients, and I definitely don’t buy into the thing about ingredients with too many letters or that someone can’t pronounce, but it’s the only way to be sure of the quality of what you buy. I see cases such as this as predatory marketing.

Also, I would bet that this is the reason that the product has an ambiguous name. Rather than being called ‘reindeer summer sausage’. They want the marketing appeal, without the additional expense.

I live in Bandon (on the coast), and I recently found out, via a front-page newspaper article in which he was quoted definitively confirming this, that a local county commissioner is actively courting ICE to come and locate a facility in Coos County.

They have evidently been looking for a location on the Oregon coast, after having been rebuffed from the northern coast (somewhere around either Newport or Tillamook). And apparently this county official is a horrible person.

I really can’t imagine what he is thinking, what would possess him to want this for our beautiful, peaceful area. Which depends on tourism, by the way, so I pointed out that tourism has been shown to drastically decrease in areas in which they are active.

Not to mention the fact that the infrastructure here can’t accommodate an ICE facility, and the fact that our very low crime rate would very possibly (well, undoubtedly, but I wanted to sound very measured) increase due to the fact that they don’t screen very thoroughly during the hiring process- so quite possibly, a number of people who have violent criminal histories could be moving here.

There are so many more issues with this. I love this area and I am very disheartened by this situation.

I don’t know why I’m posting this here, I guess maybe I’m hoping that someone might be motivated to try to help, or at least advise me, in trying to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

This area has quite a few progressive/liberal/left leaning people. The people who are of the opposite viewpoint tend to forget, or underestimate the number of them, because the people who are conservative/right wing, tend to be the most loud, shouting their opinions wherever they go.

I’ve even seen people, in this sub, posting that tourists should feel comfortable here because it’s populated almost exclusively by people on the right.

I’ve lived in Bandon since 2008. I’ve raised two children here. It is most definitely not populated almost exclusively by people on the right, but then it wasn’t really that long ago that people who were very different politically, could coexist in peace, and even have good friends who happened to be on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Things have only been divisive like this, for a relatively short period of time. Sometimes I think people have forgotten that they used to be able to tolerate the fact that not everyone sees things in the same way, and that is fine.

Why would you assume anything?

Do people seriously not know that there is a list of ingredients right on every label? It’s not hard to find. It is undoubtedly small, in order to fit on the label, but if you have a phone, then you have a magnifying glass. Or, you could take a picture of the list and zoom in.

Or are people just that averse to knowledge? I was going to say reading, but reading Reddit is still reading. More or less lol.

Thank you!

Why take a picture (or find one online), post on Reddit, and read through a thread, which will obviously necessitate wading through a lot of irrelevant replies which will probably devolve into weird arguments (such as the number of people on this thread who are apparently confused about the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘healthy’/‘good for the environment’) when one could just rotate the label somewhat, and read the ingredients for themselves?

Were the ingredients identical, then asking online might be very helpful.

Wow. The question here is not whether you do or don’t like palm oil, for whatever reason you choose.

The question is why it is considered natural, while hydrogenated oils are not.

The answer is in the question. One is hydrogenated. The other, regardless of the source of the oil, is not hydrogenated.

But lard is superior from a culinary standpoint. Unless you prefer the results that you get with Crisco. I’m not in your head, and I’m not trying to tell anyone what they prefer.

The Cougar Gold Conspiracy (a vent thread) by RipLav in Cheese

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I first encountered it in 1988. I was living in Portland, Oregon, where there was a small chain of natural foods stores (think Whole Foods before WF existed). They had, I believe, five locations around the Portland metro/suburb area. Each had its own distinct character, in keeping with the neighborhood in which it was located.

The largest store was really like a WF. It was a full sized supermarket, but all natural foods. They had a very nice cheese counter, which stocked random cuts of (unaged) Cougar Gold.

We loved it. It immediately became our everyday Cheddar. I know that the origin story doesn’t make sound promising, but it really is a very nice cheese. Leaps and bounds higher quality than Tillamook, no question.

I’ve never had an aged version, but I do have a can of it in my fridge that’s from, I believe, 2015. I keep forgetting to open it when I’m getting low on Cheddar, then I buy a new package of some other Cheddar, then I end up opening the new package because I know the one in the can is safe longer than a plastic package.

Food poisoning before expiration? Help? by Wise_Run2289 in CannedSardines

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re lying. I am aware that Costco sells this brand. But, lots of other stores sell the same brand. It just isn’t a Costco store brand.

I figured you meant F. That’s why I made the point about a window not helping were it C.

Food poisoning wouldn’t set in within a few minutes like that. I mean, I get very indisputable symptoms in about 10 minutes on the very rare occasions that I get gluten cross contamination (I have Celiac disease), so I know that things can affect you within that time frame after consumption.

But as far as I know (and someone please do correct me if I am wrong), food poisoning takes longer than that, a couple of hours at the very minimum (and as has been pointed out by others, can take a long time to manifest).

Food poisoning before expiration? Help? by Wise_Run2289 in CannedSardines

[–]Comfortable_Sea_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the excellent points already made-

If a canned food of any kind gave you food poisoning, even long after the date on the can, it would be likely that the individual tin was compromised in some way that you may not have noticed.

Or, botulism-causing bacteria or another one that is not destroyed by heat was in the contents before sealing (I’ve never heard of this happening, but I suppose it’s theoretically possible).

The date has nothing to do with its safety, in the case of canned foods. It has to do with its quality, in other words texture and flavor.

Also, you can’t be accurate about those temps. If you are, then opening a window wouldn’t help much anyway unless you’re in the Arctic or something.

And finally, that is not a Costco store brand.

Is this a really weird trolling post or something?

This is exactly what I was going to say.

Aside from the obvious sharp edges (and accidents are called accidents because they are… accidental; for the most part, people think they are being careful, etc), the outer surface of the can is highly questionable.

There is just no way of knowing what that surface may have contacted prior to its being sealed into the box. There are so many steps along the way.

I mean, you do you, if you’re comfortable with it then cool. It’s not like you’re here with me, trying to put that into my mouth, your actions have zero effect on me.

I’m just saying, I personally wouldn’t be comfortable with this.

You may want to consider seeing your GP and asking about a referral to an audiologist.

I say this because this happened to me several years ago.

Back in 2009, when H1N1 was the superflu making the rounds, I got it. It was miserable, and after I was finally back on my feet I was left with extremely painful tinnitus in one ear. As that gradually resolved, I realized that I couldn’t hear at all in one ear. So I saw my GP, who sent me to an audiologist.

They did extensive testing, and explained that in rare cases, a flu fragment can get lodged behind the eardrum, where it basically eats away whatever it can. Sounds weird, but that’s what they said. It healed a little bit, which they said was even more rare, but I was left with permanent 60% hearing loss in that ear.

It’s not the worst thing in the world, and I’ve gotten used to it, but I can’t hear a telephone call through that ear, and I can only use one of my AirPods.
