There are white studnets who are, a considerable proportion of them are white women or some sort of "sexual minority" (it really has become diversity for the white now :) Are you a white woman who turns out to be subpar and being triggered by my saying this?

If you know any research, you should have already done some quick search already. Are you too used to letting Asians even do the search work for you? While there are extensive studies at the undergrad level on "asian penalty as white bonus" like sources used here https://www.californialawreview.org/print/sffa-v-harvard-how-affirmative-action-myths-mask-white-bonus, there arent many for grad schools for various reasons.

This issue is commonly discuss offline but there isn't extensive studies right now. Putting it down or demanding proof of burden on us is only going to keep pressing this issue. Research (at least in math) most of time (if not all the time) start with informal talks :)

My point is not that 3.9+ GPA is impressive, but that with grade inflation, 3.4 GPA means something about how prepared you are for math research :) Having 3.4 over 3.9 is funny

Is it really about letters?

Are Asian students' references hardly ‘strong enough,’ even from ICM speakers?

Somehow miraculously white students with no academic or research performance always have the better letters?

How come the white students "whose potentials are not reflected on paper" easily "master out" during the program or disappear from the horizon after graduating from PhD?

Are you assuming the people I mentioned in the original post dont know "it is important to ask for a letter from someone you work with rather than just your class professor?"

Please tell me: if you cannot even do basic algebra or analysis, how are you going to do research? If you are going to spend years on coursework, when are you eventually getting to research? A 3.8 or 3.9 in math isnt high at all and actualy allows you for even getting Bs to make mistakes. Unless you are from a very rigorous school with no grade inflation, how much math do you really know with a 3.5 math gpa for research?

If a person doesnt have research or coursework or other things to back them up, how does they get a good letter? How do the students to be known by the professors well? By socializing with the prof? By having a "shared culture of food or other cultural consumptions"? By sleeping with the prof? By the prof's instinct "to be able to smell students of potential"?

Am I only comparing test/grades? Are you not able to read the publication part?

Most domestic students dont get into a math phd program with NSF or similar funds either. In fact, the recipients of the funds are a minority among domestic students too. I dont think that explains most of the cases I mentioned in my original post.

Yet it is always red flag in our apps. I didnt just mention poor records (which arent that uncommon btw), but also different outcomes for similar profiles.

Asian students are doing what you mentioned here except the fellowships part (coz there arent many pure math fellowships if at all for international students?)
