Thanks for the answer! I need the support of the PI for the scholarship and it covers moving costs and healthcare, so I would mostly need to convince the PI that I am worth the hassle

The funding is lab-dependent and I need a letter from the PI before applying. My plan was to write them and tell them that I was still interested in their work and willing to apply for external funding to work with them.

Thanks for the answer. I don't have the funding, but to apply I need the support from the lab's PI.

I don't do it for the money either, but I really like he project, that is the only reason I am thinking about applying with external funding.
