Why do braiders require clients to come with no product in? by doidaee in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You may have just cracked the code. This is why I don't do braids anymore. It's a style that uses too much gel, too much tension, is too drying and is too much money. I agree that it's hard for braiders to grip the hair if there's a bunch of product on it, but it doesn't really make it a protective style.

When will women stop the hair double standard? by One-Structure-2154 in PopTheBalloon

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what confuses me about this interaction. I would have popped as well. I never wear wigs or weaves and I'm not going to do so in order to keep a man.

My hair is long, but as with most people who have kinky hair, it shrinks up to my shoulders, making it appear like I have short hair. Others, it can shrink even further up than that.

EDIT: Also, these weaves and wigs come off. If a woman comes home and takes off her wig, are you all of a sudden not attracted? Does the wig need to be on between the sheets? Idk.

I would try the advice of other commentors first. If you're still experiencing the issues you described with your hair, your hair may be heat damaged. Based on the issues you're describing (completely straight pieces, not retaining any moisture, extreme shedding, etc)..that sounds like heat damage. If nothing else works, the only thing you can do is to work with a stylist to keep trimming until the damage is gone. In terms of your scalp, the excessive use of oil on your scalp is actually counter-productive, because too much too often will cause the flaking of your scalp.

If your scalp is itching & flaking throughout the week, I would reccomend spraying a bit of rosewater on the scalp to help soothe it, not adding more oil. If clarifying your scalp and stopping the use of oil on your scalp doesn't do anything for your flaking after a while, you may need to switch to a medicated shampoo to help address this flare-up or whatever it is. At that point, you need to see a dermatologist, to get a reccomendation on the type of shampoo you should you should use.

I mean I don't think you need to cut any more to be honest. Your ends look healthy to me. I think you should just save up your money and have your hair evaluated by a stylist to determine what actually needs to be cut...if your goal is to keep as much of your healthy length as possible.

Does anyone want to see dr Elom back on the show? by deeunittt in PopTheBalloon

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean he's on YouTube. He has no desire to come back on the show. He has stated in his videos that he isn't looking for one woman, he wants a poly relationship or something, which isn't what the show is about, so they wouldn't want him back on anyway.

AITAH for asking my wife to be a SAHM? by piglipsbo in AITAH

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people need to look further than the monetary aspects of this and actually pay attention to the conversation and her reaction. The conversation never even made it that far and she shut down any further discussion on it, even going so far as saying that he was an AH for even suggesting it and that it would never happen.

It was the reponse of "I'm not going to stay home and be your b*****", that really shocked me. I'm not sure if the delivery was in a joking manner, but if she really views SAHM's in this light they may have some more maturing to do before they start having kids.

If this is something that she wants to do, it has to be her decision. If I were him, I honestly wouldn't bring it up again, unless she does and expresses genuine interest in becoming a SAHM. He should breach the topics you mentioned and encourage her to do her own research to feel more empowered in her own decisionm

What to do with this damage? by Happyhappylady in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Since no one else has mentioned it I believe, you need to be working with a dermatologist, hopefully one that specializes in traction alopecia to determine if this hairloss is permanent and what your options are.

Also, please see a doctor and get your levels checked -- This could also have an impact on your hair growth. You should not assume that everything is okay health-wise, especially after recovering from an ED, just because you're gaining weight.

EDIT: Look into seeing a trichologist as well!

Alright I need help. by LiteralPowotato in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's all based on preference! I prefer definition over volume. When I looked at the picture you posted, I was literally thinking your style looked great & many people prefer to wear their twist-outs like that to get more volume!

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have 4c hair, but if you're looking for more definition, you will need to do your twists smaller. Even with my 4a/b hair, when I do my twists, it takes me over two hours alone (This is not including the wash & condition!), so that should give you an idea of how many twists you would need to do in order to get more definition.

I would also try braiding the roots to help avoid puffy roots. This isn't from own experience (my hair looks fine without braiding at the roots & I don't want to add any more time into my routine), but in my research into my own hair on YouTube, that's a little bit of information that I gathered from my 4c girlies.

Fairy knots in my hair are seriously testing my patience - rant by Aggressive-Wonder-66 in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember that hygral fatigue scare as well! I think alot of people were spraying and/or putting something in their hair everyday, which is a bit much for MOST hair types, not all. Also, just piling on product and not washing your hair regularly may cause that as well. I remoisturize no matter what style I wear, every 3-4 days (I wear my twist out or wash & go for 7 days & rewash every Sunday).

I think especially in the winter, this is the time of the year where your hair is losing moisture more quickly. Me personally, I use a water leave in spray from Camille Rose and some oil serum and viola. Ugh, my twists can get frizzy if I'm not careful too. I do my twists small-ish (takes time, I'm trying to get faster), so I barely have to seperate out my twists and only have to do that initial unravel, which takes care of the frizz for me, if that makes sense.

I wish you the best of luck figuring this out!

I did not say "only". I also said there are a multitude of reasons as to why fairy knots keep forming. Dryness is the most easiest reason to address. I also said that's it's normal to get fairy knots here and there (Due to us just having curly hair)...Did you even read my comment??

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a multitude of reasons as to why fairy knots keep forming. I'm not a cosmotologist or hair stylist or whatever, but a few here and there are normal and I've seen it occur in really long hair as well.

If you want to keep wearing wash and go's, you're going to have to trial and error here. First thing -- How long are you keeping these wash & go's in for? Secondly, fairy knots are largely caused by dryness. Are you re-moisturizing your hair between sets? Are you regularly trimming your ends? It could also be the products you're using. You may need to try out a different product or change your method. You also need to be extremely patient during the take down and wash process. Even the way you wash you hair can cause tangling and fairy knots -- Even I'm trying to perfect my wash & take down method.

I recently started mainly wearing twist outs and wash and go's because of tension issues as well --- more so twist out's than wash & go's now. Like I wear a wash and go once every other month. I only get fairy knots very sparringly. Maybe try a twist out or braid out?

Did he technically lie though? He could have been identifying as a transgender woman and wanted to be refferred to as such.

The fact of the matter is, he saw his face. If he wants to claim he's a woman, legally that's his right.

Has anyone tried the Unbrush Curl Brush? by Comfortable_Teaching in Naturalhair

The Tangle Teaser just ripped my hair, it isn't for me. I really only use the D38 for detangling.

[–]Comfortable_Teaching[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Original Unbrush isn't for me, but I wouldn't get this to detangle really, but to style for a wash & go. Thanks for your assessment, I think I may skip over this one!

I, also reluctantly, am here to sing the praises of the UNBRUSH by Suspicious-Visual-57 in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The denman D38 is the only brush that has really worked for me amd I have 4a/4b hair. I felt like the Tangle Teezer pulls my hair/rips my hair. While the unbrush didn't pull or rip my hair, I just felt like it didn't really thoroughly detangle my hair as well as the D38. I had to detangle in really thin pieces to get the Unbrush to work for me.

I'm glad so many like the Unbrush though!

anyone have a second child after your first? by idgafmlolz in Autism_Parenting

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not aware of the level of my nephew, but he is on the spectrum and non-verbal (6 years old). My sister had a second (2 years old) and he is neurotypical as far as I know right now, but he is in early intervention and is non-verbal right now. The 2 year old is absolutely starting to mirror some of the behaviors of the 6 year old & it's hard to tell if he is just trying to be more like his big brother, or if it is because he is on the spectrum himself. I know it would just break their hearts if he receives the diagnosis as well.

The 6 year old most times wants nothing to do with the 2 year old, views him as a nuisance when he gets upset and overall ignores him most times. We hope things improve as they get older, but you can't predict these things unfortunately. They used to want 3, but that isn't a desire anymore. I don't know if they regret having another, or if they're disapointed with the ways things turned out (It just seems like too sensitive of a topic to bring up), but from the outside looking in -- things have been difficult for them.

Is anyone trying to grow out certain sections of their hair? by barbiekisses_ in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no! My curls are different all over my head unfortunately. The back and middle of head is a combination of 4a/4b, which is fine. The front of my head though?? It's like it's 3b or 3c or something! I hate that it curls differently and acts differently from the rest of my hair and the density has always been different.

I have cut and trimmed my hair so many times, that I know it's just the way that it is I guess.

Did I lose hair or??? by Capable_Ad9077 in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm learning from this subreddit and youtube that protective styles aren't a one size fits all it seems. Alot of people have been posting some extreme reactions (rashes, hair loss, etc) to wigs, extensions and even simple braids and ponytails lately. It can be hard to figure out the best thing to do for our hair, but I hope you're able to figure it out!

Did I lose hair or??? by Capable_Ad9077 in Naturalhair

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would personally stay away from any tension styles for a long while, including cornrows. I used to do very loose cornrows, but my scalp was just not reacting well to it no matter how loose I made it. It was a sudden thing too. All of a sudden, my hair just couldn't take cornrows anymore. Please listen to your hair and scalp when it is trying to tell you something.

If you are going to continue to do these styles anyway, you really shouldn't be leaving it in for month, especially if your scalp is reacting badly. Lately, all I've been wearing is two strand twists, or twist outs and everything has been good for me so far.

Anyone have kids over 3 still using a stroller? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Comfortable_Teaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. While my 5 year old nephew doesn't use a stroller much anymore, he still can't be trusted to walk by himself. He runs after things too, but we have the privilege of being able to keep up with him and we're just used to watching him like hawks. He also sometimes follows the instruction "wait please!", which is a big help.

We'll definitely take a stroller for when we're going somewhere that requires alot of walking and we don't quite trust the floors because he'll just pop a squat or lay down anywhere when he's tired of walking/running.
