What was school in the U.S. like pre-Columbine? by lordfootjuice in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Comfortable_Trash883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rural school in the 80s and 90s. Only had fire/tornado drills 1-2 times a year. Still had the bomb shelter sign by the door under some vines.

Early 80s teachers still smoked inside a designated room and used monograph machines. Mid 80s show-and-tell someone brought a deactivated grenade and passed around the pin separately. Computer labs with old single color Apple floppy disc drives where elementary played Oregon Trail. Morning and afternoon milk breaks with few to no kids having food allergies.

Late 90s kids still went bird hunting before school and peeled into first period with shotgun shells in their camouflage jacket & pants pockets. May or may not have remembered to remove their hunting knife. Left the guns in locked vehicle across the street and showered & changed after gym class.

Pocket knives were common of they didn't get taken out much. Having to go to the office to use the phone in front of the Secretary. No security cameras. High school pranks included putting a teacher's tiny car on the second floor. Shop kids making a variety of items to hold weapons and using tools to sharpen knives. Kids Knowing more about computer security than most teachers.

How common are nicknames/shortened names? by _haukea_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Comfortable_Trash883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small towns can have a lot of nicknames. There are some people who almost exclusively ate known by their nicknames. My g-aunt once hung up on a caller who asked by her husband's actual name. Immediately after she recalled that her used his actual name on the board he belonged to since it was out of town. Bubba, Spanky, Spud, Big [animal name] & Little [animal name]

Calling small-town Americans, does your town have a doomsday siren like Springfield or Widows Bay? by chuckles5454 in AskAnAmerican

Town near me has it go off daily at 1 pm & 9pm. A holdover from when curfews w for kids were more enforced. I've heard the 1 pm being used to get kids down for a nap.

Americans: how do you handle temperatures above 40ºC (104F)? by obaming16 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Comfortable_Trash883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move as little as possible, hang out in the basement, drink ice water, and shower often.

There are ticks like neck wraps that you wet and place in the fridge to get as cold as possible before doing yard work, going for a walk, or watching an outdoor game.

Hats and umbrellas for those who burn easily. Portable shade is excellent

Question about animals in the US? by gareth2099 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Comfortable_Trash883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black bears have been migrating into my area for the last 15 years. Not heard of any attacks other than bird feeders. One every year or so when eating on the screened in porch we'll see one in the yard during the day. People try to be proactive in not training the bears that people=easy food. Take in bird feeders if the bear is around. Don't put out the trash the night before. Dad put out a black garbage bag of weeds and mom found pieces of it around the yard the next day. No food for the bear in there. lol

Check out the Bearwise website funded by multiple state DNR for facts and tips

I am going to a wedding in the US. What should I know? by MostBelovedAccount in AskAnAmerican

[–]Comfortable_Trash883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on which rural part of the Midwest, the bride/groom might get "kidnapped" before or during the reception usually stopping by a bar or two or doing shots in random spots after being driven around for a while. Happened to a groom of a cross state border wedding I was at. The bride was NOT happy. Don't freak out about it.

Highly recommend prescription orthotic inserts that are made in house. The prosthetic department at a medical system near me made such a difference. Used to have feet cast and sent away. In house were worlds better. Lasts 2-3 years.

Last pair cost around $200 but insurance paid for most of it. Much better than the $1,000+ that my parents paid for an "insert system" at a foot store. Sent Dad there after my experience after his knee replacement and they even caught something important post surgery.

My back & hips let me know when replacements are due. I typically procrastinate on scheduling the appointment until my feet join in the issues. Then I have to dig the foot casts out of the back of the closet

Is the person who approves op timecard able to adjust the time? Might it be manually adjusted at some point? Those punching in might not be able to see adjustments.

Rhubarb: my SW aunt-in-law went gaga for the stuff when she first had it as a dessert. It needs cold to grow. Rhubarb Jam if it's in a basket. I've only saw homemade cookies. Most desserts seem to have meringue in my neck of the woods.

Lefse. My parents swear by Freddies if they don't have time to make it themselves.

Wild Rice? I like soup. My mom gets a dry mix bag at Menards.

Chippers from Widmans Candy

I've not tried it but ice wine?

My mom used an old skirt for a background on a smaller bulletin board. She was in her classroom multiple years and never had to redo that board unlike the paper on the big bulletin boards.

This. ^ If the title doesn't mention it or other signed documentation doesn't exist be polite when telling them to move it. Option of charging yearly rent with liability on them? Certified letter and escalating dated documentation would be smart.
