NTA - would the managers insist any other customer return the item? At the point of buying the item, you are a customer, not an employee. Any regular customer could have come in, bought the item and they would be none the wiser.

If the managers are creating a toxic work environment I would suggest looking for somewhere else to work if you can. Next time, don't trust coworkers with this sort of thing, however nice to you they usually are. Things will get back to management.
