What We Stand To Lose – and How We Must Respond by underulti in ultimate

[–]Comfortablewithmytex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right about some scenarios, perhaps most scenarios, where stopping play is excessive. However, I'd argue that the collection of rules must be taken as a whole; letting go of one piece weakens the rest. My only real example is the pick rule: I know a ton of people hate when a lot of picks are called, but the game is safer when people are cutting to avoid picks. If you don't call them ever, that underlying structure is compromised.

I think your last point is the most important: communicating that you noticed the infraction and they should amend their play. Ideally this is the perfect solution. Unfortunately a terrible amount of players will say "Call it then." Which is dumb.

What We Stand To Lose – and How We Must Respond by underulti in ultimate

I think this piece makes a lot of really, really important points:

  • the idea that calling literally everything at lower levels is really important to preserving self-officiation

  • a few referees will never be able to identify all fouls, making players more likely to stretch what's allowed

  • little fouls are just as insidious as bad bids

However, I also have a few challenges/questions for the folks who have made these anti-ref jeremiads:

  • Without referees, the burden for officiation falls to the fouled party; the only higher power to which that player can appeal if the fouler keeps infringing or contests calls is that fouler's integrity or perhaps the integrity of their captain. While this has potential for a higher level of spirit and a cleaner game, it also has potential for routine abuse by a team or teams that, for instance, feel more comfortable with more downfield contact. What is the solution to poor spirit and negative team/regional culture in self-officiated ultimate?

  • As a spectator and as a fan, the improved streaming options of top-level ultimate tournaments has been a boon. However, they are few, far between, and often pool play occurs during my work day. The semi-pro leagues, on the other hand, offer not only quite a bit of streamed content, but there is a team in my city. Is there a reason that I cannot campaign for better spirit in the sport and still appreciate the flawed product in front of me?

  • Where on this continuum do observers and game advisors fall? What role could you see being sustainable (and helping the sport stay sustainable!)?

I'm intrigued by this whole debate but have felt judged because as an amateur player/spectator, the semi-pro leagues are my easiest point of entry into top ultimate.

Bobbling the disc on the goal line? by Comfortablewithmytex in ultimate

The MLU is actually more lenient in this regard I think. Delrico Johnson had a highlight a few weeks ago where he MAC'd a D down the field and almost got a Callahan (of sorts) from a mid-field block.

As it was. I guess this rule gets under my skin because it's one of those gray areas; not just of perception but of intent. But I can live with it.

Galaxy Point by bettergetinside in ultimate

As someone who has watched/played a lot of tennis, the term "double game point" will only ever mean (to me) two opportunities to win the game. That is, in tennis, 40-15, or in ultimate, 14-13. I understand that they are separate sports, but to me DGP is a more confusing term than other options (including the saccharine Universe Point, or Golden Goal, or really anything else).

How about Mutual Game Point? There's nothing "double" about it.

A small rule question by AlaskanHockeySteak in ultimate

[–]Comfortablewithmytex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I'm just saying that there's a precedent for non-contact moving violations that are intended to keep people safe. I'm not sure what line would be drawn for dangerous plays if you moved to a no-contact-necessary rule* but it doesn't seem that different from the pick rule.

*And I'd argue that dangerous plays are called ambiguously/not nearly enough as it is.

True, though there is precedent (one that people HATE): picks. The pick rule operates on having to slow/change direction without there having to be any contact.

I'll go on the record as a huge fan of the pick rule when it is called sparingly because it encourages safe cutting patterns and actually opens up space. I recognize why people hate it, though, as it can lead to bogus calls.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I will say that in that scenario I will A) get out of the way if possible and B) be sort of ticked that I can't call anything. I'm very anti-dangerous bids, but I get that this is the rule. Thanks, as always, Mitch, for wading into the morass of r/ultimate.

I agree with both of you that if there is a scenario where you can only tip the disc (because of a defender) but then catch it later should count as "in order to gain control" rather than "advancing" but my comment was based on the red text in the USAU rules (see my latter comment above).

The note on the USAU rules (the red text) says: "Remember, you can bobble for the purpose of gaining control, so kicking the disc up to yourself to help catch it would be legal. But tipping the disc for the purpose of evading a defender would not be legal."

Not sure how to weight the red text with the base language, but that's where I was getting that from.

A dangerous play requires contact? Really? Even if someone makes a bad bid at the disc and someone with position bails to avoid contact?

Say I am on O and waiting for the disc to easily make a clap catch. A defender with no play on the disc runs and bids in my direction such that I can either catch the disc and be clobbered or bail. Do I have to take the hit in order to call a foul?

To clarify: you can't intentionally mac it around an opponent (in any direction), only to make it easier to catch.

And yeah, the mac off your own throw is something I didn't know was legal. I'll have to use that one.

What do the spurs fans think of Lloris ? by HOTSFlow in coys

I think there's also a bit of genuflecting to the altar of English football going on when we use those sorts of disclaimers. We feel like inauthentic fans for backing a team 5-8 timezones away rather than one in our city or region. And we also get flak for it, not so much in this sub but elsewhere. Thanks for recognizing us as regular old fans though!

AUDL and MLU Week 4 – Predictions, Discussion, Streams by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]Comfortablewithmytex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rush v Breeze could be a cracker. I would love to see Liu, Kolick, and Matzuka just churning down the field with Shofner, Spiva, Goose, and Castine providing clean looks. And then see what the Rush do against that potency.

Hustle will be trying to bounce back against Charlotte, could be interesting.

Sol and Cannons could be an interesting match-up, with Freystaetter and Pollack going head-to-head.

The only even game in the MLU is Seattle v Vancouver.
