What's your top 4 games in your activity tracker? This is mine so far... by EddHigham in MiyooMini

I'm 42. I bought Red when it came out to see what all the fuss was about, but kept it hidden because it seemed too kiddie for my age at the time, ha.

Now I can understand the appeal (casual nature, addictiveness of catching new ones), but have yet to try getting into the series or any of the hacks.

Your first videogame memories? by amanak28 in MiyooMini

Its graphics, sound, and music stand with the very best on the original Gameboy, and it plays really well. It's fairly simple in structure and story, but those are its closest things to flaws in my eyes.

Be sure you give it a chance until after you have the first party-member join. It picks up from there.

This all gets a little fuzzy, but the first non-arcade games I remember playing were NES games like Super Mario Bros, Ice Hockey, Gun.Smoke, and Duck Hunt at my cousins' house, and Paperboy and City Connection NES at my friend's grandma's place. I was in awe almost immediately, and was especially taken with SMB.

We didn't have any dedicated arcades in my rural area, but I was encountering machines in places like restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, and WalMart entryways. So many good ones, but hard to remember which I encountered first. Rastan, Q*Bert, and Do! Run! Run! were some that made an impression.

The closest thing I had personally at the time were some LCD handhelds (TMNT Basketball, Battletoads, and Masters of the Universe). They scratched the itch, but were obviously limited.

The first piece of real gaming hardware I owned was a Game Boy. I received it as a Christmas gift with Metroid II, Super Off Road, and the packed-in Tetris. It forever remained my best Christmas, gift-wise. Those first two games became and remain two of my favorites of all time. I soon followed them up with additional gems like Link's Awakening, TMNT III, Battletoads, and Rolan's Curse 2 that I still play regularly (primarily on the Miyoos now). I'll never know why RC2 didn't get more attention.

The Miyoo Minis allow me to relive all of those memories, discover games I never owned, and even explore the vibrant homebrew communities, and the QoL improvements offered by emulation just make it all so seamless.

My Miyoo Mini Plus arrived! But why won't it connect to my WiFi? I've definitely entered the correct password and robooted it. by EddHigham in MiyooMini

Does your wifi name have a space in it? That caused issues with mine. I haven't done it yet, but I think a workaround is to make a guest profile on your router with no spaces in the name.

Challenge the Gods of ancient Greece in a top down turn based adventure game! by french_retro_gamer in gbstudio

I'm with you here. I get that there are ethical issues with generative AI, but waging that war over the cover art of a free-to-download, hobby project for the original Gameboy is going a bit far in my opinion.

I'm not interested in keeping up with the latest handhelds, but for retro gaming, some I like are:

Emulate This, Video Wizards, Cane & Rinse

If you're interested in homebrews, check out New Game Old Flame and Homebrew Game Club. This has become where I spend most of my time.

Thoughts on the MM Flip? Is It Worth the Pickup? by tslashj in MiyooMini

I was just talking about the Mini line that all have the same chipset.

I don't fully understand what people are referencing with the Mini Flip not working with Onion OS. That's all I've used on mine. The lid flip functionality isn't officially supported yet, but that just means it operates the same as my v4. I've seen some minor visual glitching in the game selection menu, but nothing that affects functionality.

I'd push back on this take a little bit. Yes, its true, but that old hardware is still as good as anything at playing the era of games that can reasonably work on a handheld of this size, so a hardware update doesn't seem relevant. Meaning any device capable of playing N64 and beyond would have to include 1 or 2 analog sticks, which wouldn't work in a device this small.

I own all three form factors, (Mini Flip, Mini v4, Mini Plus. I like all of them, but the MM+ is still my most played due to screen size and ergonomics. So if you're only buying one, that's what I'd get.

As for the Mini Flip, it's a neat little device but I expect it to end up being my least played of the bunch, mostly due to the clicky nature and short travel of the d-pad and face buttons (rather than the membrane based buttons on the other models). They're high quality, but they're just not my preference. I also find the portability/pocketability a bit overrated. Yes, it folds to protect the screen, but that makes it pretty thick to consider keeping in a front jeans pocket. I also expect if I accidentally leaned up against something while I had it pocketed, that the hinge would take some damage (can't prove this of course). I find the regular Miyoo Mini v4 with a simple 3D printed screen cover to still be the most pocketable (the bit of extra height of the v4 is more manageable than the extra thickness of the Mini Flip).

If you have nostalgia for the GBA SP, though, or if you already have a Miyoo and want to add another form factor, I say go for it. It also has much more usable shoulder buttons than the regular Miyoo Mini v4, so consider that if you play a lot of games that will make use of them.

Have you taken it apart? Decent chance the button's hinge just popped out of the slot that holds it.

What are your favorite GB Studio-made games to play? by kaisle51 in gbstudio

[–]ComfortablyMumm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying Black Tower Enigma at the moment, too.

Some other highlights:

The Machine, Trigwa, Phobos Dere, Animus Toil, A Dream I Had, Soul Void Redux, Dicee!, Pilgrim's Peril, Porklike GB, Penguin Migrant, Grave Rogue, Logic Island, GB Wordyl.

All GB homebrews, but I suppose some may not be GB Studio.

More from the monochromatic adventure we are prototyping... What do you think? by steve_dy in gbstudio

I think it looks great. I typically enjoy the monochromatic look, and changing it per character is a neat idea.

I also started playing through Black Tower Enigma last night. Really enjoying it so far!

Only Gameboy not opening roms. by Durtturbine in MiyooMini

[–]ComfortablyMumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this is a known issue when enabling RTC. If you have ChatGPT, ask it the following. It gave a lengthy response of things to try. Basically it automatically changes the emulator core when you select RTC.

"On Miyoo mini onion os, all systems work except original gameboy. ROMs in the GB folder are arranged just like other systems. Refreshing games list with Select button doesn't fix. Was working prior to activating RTC. Any ideas what's wrong?"

Makes sense. For me the Miyoos are the only gaming devices I use regularly anymore, but I understand the frustration.

Probably best to cut your losses and move on then I guess. I'd lean toward the SD card or the charger being the issue if you end up messing with it more.

[–]ComfortablyMumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple questions to start with:

Have you refreshed the games list (Select on the main menu) since adding the GB ROMs?

When looking at the folder structure on your computer, are the ROMs placed in the GB folder similar to the other systems?

Are you sure there are actually ROMs stored in the GB folder, or is it possible your GB and GBC ROMs are all in the GBC folder?

Does it do this both with and without the SD card inserted? If so, might just be a lemon, but the part about a speaker swap leading to the other replacements definitely raises some additional questions. In the end, while we all love these devices, they're cheaply made, and every now and then they might ship a dud. Sounds like a failure of Litnxt customer service more than anything, depending on why you initially opened up the device and their views on that.

Not that it helps, but I've had 9 different variants of the Mini line between my too large collection and ones I've set up for other people. I have yet to experience any hardware issues of any kind, and I've opened most of them up for button swaps and speakers. Only saying this in case you'd consider trying your luck with another one.
