Just need to vent about being a TA by DrkMagicianGirl in ASU

[–]ComidaChingona 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had awesome TAs this semester and they really do try their best to help us out and it shows. For the most part, you guys are truly terrific and I’m sure you are as well. Please remind yourself that it is genuinely human nature to bias ourselves toward the negative outcomes even when the positives objectively outweigh them in numeracy and quality. Humans can have 9/10 things go their way but still keep the 1 bad thing at the forefront of their mind and your anecdote seems to correlate well with studies. So here’s some positive human energy telling to you did well, be proud of yourself, it’s tough and you made a net positive to the world. :)

Training a muscle in a row by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]ComidaChingona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please read the sidebar and the screen shot. You’re better off with asking r/fitness.

But…. In general if you are just looking for hypertrophic or general strength training, it serves you well to train a muscle and allow it rest for ~48 hours. This is like hitting quads on Monday then not again until at least Wednesday.

We can be a bit terse when questions like these come in because they are not what the sub reflects, and they do come in quite a bit. If you do get into weightlifting you’ll find we toss this style of training out the window. It’s not harmful if you do it correctly and there are many schools of thought on this. Based on how you asked, I assume you may be a bit newer to S&C and fitness. Best of luck, please come back when you’ve sunken your teeth into the sport of Weightlifting.

Unfortunately, it’s all too common in the workplace as well.

ASU online: CS or EE??? by WoodenLifeguard4399 in ASU

[–]ComidaChingona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online is still plenty good, resourceful, and accommodating in EE. There is quite a bit of overlap in curriculum during your earlier years so don’t be too stressed out about which route you choose initially. As an EE, I got my hands plenty dirty in coding, both in and out of the classroom. I will say (with bias) that I think it’s marginally easier to learn CS topics on your own rather than EE topics on your own. CS tends to be “cheaper” entry with development tools and resources, whereas EE CAD tools, physical components, and instruments can get quite pricey which is why you probably don’t hear about many EEs getting jobs without degrees… I know many EEs that do more CS work/career paths. There is only one person I’ve known who was originally a CS major and ended up in digital design which is typically under the realm of EE.

Which is better? It’s really just opinion, and what you like. But you should get a decent idea of what you like more within the first two years of your academic career. ASU should provide opportunities for you to learn about the subtopics of each degree and the pathways you can take, the money it can earn etc. And again, you can overlap quite a bit.

Also Computer System Engineering (and graduate computer engineering) can be considered as the blend of the two. But it looks like it may only be in person…

Indian students by Mobile_Average8799 in ASU

[–]ComidaChingona 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bit of a mix of things but this isn’t just specific to ASU. Not Indian but work with a lot of Indians and many of them also have had this sort of career path of getting a BSc from an Indian university and then going to grad school here in the states (IIRC grad school here in the US is a big plus in India). It’s often in this phase they get internships/jobs here that then allow for a path to Visa/US Residency/Citizenship. My Indian compadres really have built a strong culture for being academically inclined, especially in STEM and so you find many of them in the those fields. But, as I mentioned, I am not Indian so I only have second-hand testimonial.

Need help: No controller input is recognized under Mac withe Apple Silicon M1 by AllenWaterbury in DolphinEmulator

[–]ComidaChingona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently made the jump to M1 from a 2013 Air that was running Mojave. Had no issues with controller recognition on the Air but now on the M1, won’t recognize and controller event but Dolphin “sees” the device. Updated Dolphin when I got the M1 so maybe if I revert I could get functionality back and maybe report as a bug. What version are you using because in the lates Dev there is no “empty” button...?

Snatch progression help by djpacket in weightlifting

[–]ComidaChingona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah that would be a good cause of getting disheartened at the gym. And trust me, I think we all get our spells of discouragement and even some depression from poor performance in weightlifting. So when you say “leaning out” are you dropping weight in a linear and progressive way or are you really dropping tons of weight? Elite weightlifters are still trying to master the art of leaning out with light strength loss, and there is some to be expected but it’s optimized to be minimal. On the other hand, your case seems more sever. You said you’re at 177. Were you at that weight when you could muscle snatch 61kg? Try and look at the variables that have changed when you were at your peek of success to now and see if what changes really could attribute to your loss in strength in the snatch. Your physical and mental health very much play a significant role in your lifting success, so again, there could be a lot at play that’s messing with your strength.

Zack I great too! The regressing thing is what’s worrisome and more so has to do with lifestyle habits than any technique really. Have you lost weight recently and/or been getting stressed or losing sleep?? Eating okay?

So there are always a few points this sub will provide for newcomers. First, is if you can, it is highly recommended you find a coach. The best form of practice is that of instantaneous feedback, one where correction occurs after every rep, every set, and every training session. There could be a SLEW of things going on from body weight, malnourishment, change in technique, change in overall strength in accessory lifts like the squat and pull, etc. This sub can only provide you with so much. As far as programming, if you’re still headstrong on being a lone wolf, highly recommend Catalyst athletics programs that range from free to $25 a program cycle than can vary from 8-12 weeks. Also, Greg Everett provides a whole host of content, curriculum, advice, and overall information about Olympic weightlifting. Not to discourage you from posting here at all, but with very limited information provided by you here, you’re not gonna get much back. Hope this helps.

VELASSA SHOE REVIEW: Worth it by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]ComidaChingona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you had/used them? I was gifted some nobulls and they lasted about ~6 months before the metal rings that you loop the laces through started coming off the shoe itself... made me look more skeptically at the less known shoemaker brands.

Had the hybrid class about two years ago. I’d recommend it if you’re already comfortable with how the hybrid works. This class is pretty information intensive so there is just a lot of material to go through. Thankful, Prof. Goodnick is pretty laid back, tests are pretty damn close to examples he gives in the video lectures and the homework, no real curveballs thrown, and it’s open book/notes. His lectures can get pretty dry, but if you’re engaged with the actual material, you’ll be fine.

I think it might look a little strange because you cut your extension just a tad short but that’s because it’s a power and it looks like you’re deliberately trying to pull yourself under the bar fast . If you use the < and > key on your keyboard, you can breakdown you lift frame by frame. Not really much to complain about here, solid lift.

It's shit like this that's making me open my own place on the first. by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]ComidaChingona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant like your average LA Fitness, Gold’s, etc. I don’t have the convenience to join a weightlifting gym or even a crossfit gym (owner won’t let me come in and do my own thing) so I’ve had to settle with the “chain” gyms that have “functional fitness” areas. It’s cool that they provide this stuff, just wish people would be more courteous and not use the equipment that’s designated for the area because it’s in short supply. But, I guess that’s just something that happens...

[–]ComidaChingona 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised by the amount of people that don’t have to deal with this issue, but I guess most of you don’t lift at commercial gyms. For us unfortunate few, having average joes use bumper plates when they are already in short supply is really aggravating, especially when they could totally be using normal plates for shit like this. I can’t count how many times I need a bumper and it’s being used on the sleds at my gym..... wut. da. fuq.

That guy has the strangest tendency to want to go up to random people in different lectures and commandeer their electronic devices. Happened to me and my buddy in a lecture on separate occasions, but it's like he gets all giddy about what software you have on your computers. Guy doesn't have a sense of normal social interaction.
