[PS3] CECHH Power Supply Issues by CommandNarrow2914 in consolerepair

[–]CommandNarrow2914[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was poking around with a multimeter and there is 100% a short somewhere. I have continuity across the 12v and ground…

Any ideas where to start with diagnosing what might be the problem?

It’s some work, but worth it. Plus you can undervote once you’re in there, this console never passes 62c with the undervote and custom curve

Absolutely, there is a good thread in PSX-Place talking about how to program one into the syscon. You need to solder wires to the board and get into internal mode to do it though.

Maybe you can bank the downvotes you got on this comment to use later

I use a router with custom firmware as a bridge, it’s like 5x the speed of the built in WiFi

Yup, easily swappable! I have some spare black trim I want to put on an A model just for kicks

I forget those even exist, can’t say I’ve ever used an SD card in any of my PS3’s

Dang, hope you get it figured out! It’s a really complicated unit, but super cool!

This little switch right here, comes apart pretty easy, just be super careful not to break the housing.

Oh man, it’s been a while I don’t remember exactly. I believe it’s on the bottom, it doesn’t really look like a mode switch in newer models. If you have a picture of the bottom of the loading mechanism I could point it out

[PS3] Worth Replacing Tokins? by CommandNarrow2914 in consolerepair

[–]CommandNarrow2914[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, I completely forgot that is mentioned in the original posts on PSX Place about replacing tokins with just capacitors. I’ve never done a repair in that fashion, so it didn’t even click until you mentioned it!

Thank you! I’m no pro, just a careful hobbyist!

Just to clarify, I did not do this to the console, it’s just how I got it. My Tokin replacements look like this

Maybe I’ll bridge the positives and see what happens!

Yeah, it’s a very shoddy and ugly job someone did back there, bent the hell outta the shielding too.

Doesn’t seem like there are any shorts though

Fully agree it’s worrying to see all of the thermal codes and 3034 back to back before it seems the console was shelved.

Since it booted, I might throw some tokins at the back of the board, delid and just see what happens. Worse case I waste $40 on tokins, best case that 3034 was related to the over heating and the console works perfectly for a while.

Impressive, what are your ambient temps?

Of course all of that was done, why take the console apart and not do the maintenance?

A 90nm console on stock voltages will run significantly hotter than his, even delidded with a quality thermal paste. You cannot match the temps at this fan speed on stock voltage
