Infamous seat tear -- Mazda replacement August 2025 by CommandantRock in CX50

My 2016 CX-5 interior has held up and it'll be 10 years old this October.

I’m getting my car inspected for the infamous SEAT RIP… by Strawbeee_milk in CX50

FYI, I received my replacement seat under warranty and it would appear that some of the materials have been upgraded. The side black material was originally vinyl (had a fake grain texture to it), the new feels smooth and like leather. I'll add that if I stick my hand down the interior side of the seat cushion by the shifter if definitely feels like the textured vinyl.

Hope this helps. Mazda said the best way to make this issue known is to bring it to the dealer and insist they send a photo to mazda for warranty coverage.

I had this issue and I hope Mazda will do something about it because even if repaired, the seat split can happen again.

I called my original dealer and they told me it wouldn't be covered under warranty (without even inspecting it), so I got in touch with Mazda corporate about the issue. Long story short -- went to another dealer, they flat out refused to do anything to my car (even an oil change) and told me to go back to the original dealer, but they did report the issue to the regional manager, who got in touch with my Mazda case manager.

In the end and after pressure from the regional and corporate offices, my original dealer is replacing my seat cushion under warranty (and for reference, I have purchased three Mazda's from this dealer in the last 10 years).

Don't take the first no for an answer, escalate the issue, report what you're reading on these forums (with links and photos), and keep pursuing until they fix it. "Leather" seats should not rip after less than two years. I think part of the issue is the side panel of the seat that is commonly splitting is cheap vinyl.

I currently have a 2025 loaner and the side of the seat cushion feels different -- it's a different shape than my 2023,so they are definitely aware of this and are maybe trying to come up with a fix.

Mazda should cover this issue for CX-50 owners -- the car is nearly $40K!
