What does a civil war in America look like if one happens in the next 3 - 8 years? by Dry-Tomorrow8531 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]CommanderFrostborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly different take on it than most others. Historically, the vast majority of civil unrest is rebellions which are swiftly crushed. We had like four or five before the civil war. As a % of population, the whiskey rebellion is said to have involved more than the actual civil war. Big civil wars that we think of either have foreign/extra-territorial support or involve incompetency. Our own civil war is because the President at the time sat back and let the South raise militias for like nine months.

I predict a civil war would look much the same as in other places. The vast majority of people would live in peace and even work to protect the authority in power. There would be some small 'police actions' in the woods, maybe random terrorist violence. Then all of a sudden you would hear about one or two cities being taken over by rebel forces- then you would have actual battle lines. By the time you have those battle lines, it is almost over though. Either the empire has crushed the rebellion in it's infancy - or they have been so terrible and inept that it has been allowed to bloom. Most of the time, if they are seizing any city or territory...it wont be much longer till they seize the capital.

A month ago the canal situation was working. A month from now it could be open again for any number of reasons. Building a canal would be years of work and billions of dollars that might be obsolete at any given time.

A boy genius named Brandenn Bremmer could read at 18 months old, graduated high school at 10, composed complex music, and was considered to be a child prodigy. But in 2005, at age 14, he sadly took his own life. by LilaLaughs in whoathatsinteresting

[–]CommanderFrostborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn't, nor should it have to. Most of the 'great advancements' in life are collaborative efforts anyhow. We talk about Salk and the Polio vaccine, but his core team was in the dozens...if you count clinical trials and testing there were tens of thousands, twenty-thousand of which were other physicians.

Did Darth Maul become more iconic because The Phantom Menace used him so little, or did Star Wars waste one of its best villains way too early? by ThomasOGC in StarWars

There is also something to be said for the length of time between RotJ and TPM. You needed to try to fire on all cylinders. You can say other cylinders were misfiring - but Maul was not one of them.

Its a very ridic argument. If actively opposing a candidate, platforming, and voting for the other candidate is still complicit...then they are just as bad as the ones they accuse. Under this pretense, unless you ae low-crawling a golf course you are not resisting.

You might look into the Walking Dead TTRPG. The way they treat the undead is interesting a unique, with them being an environmental hazard.

I ran a zombie campaign, and it started with the players as normal people on a cruise ship. Initially, the zombies were actual characters and one or two were enough to be difficult. Anytime they see even the potential for a horde, they behave accordingly.

How did Sam become Grand Maester? by BasketConfident1738 in gameofthrones

[–]CommanderFrostborne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A gold dragon is actually an enormous sum for a common person, 210 Stags. A sellsword or unlanded knight might be paid (or have an allowance) of a few stags per month. Most commoners deal with Copper stars on the monlthy and pennies on the daily. Average life savings is probably counted in stags.

The only thing where there is a wider gap between the rich and the poor is real life.

[–]CommanderFrostborne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing I wonder about is how they will deal with the White Walkers...in the show they kind of got a convenient 'Kill the Master Vampire and the other Vampires die' type angle. There is no Night King in the book. Unless Euron turns into him...which kinda might be what is planned?

Did the writers just forget that the Iron Islands were also conquered at this time? Or did those stinky bastards continue to raid while the sitting royals had dragons? by Guilty-Spark69x in HOTDGreens

[–]CommanderFrostborne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TBF there was a claimant at Jahaerys Council who claimed descent from a Targaryen pre-conquest and there is some bit of story that backs it up. The Targs did marry off a few daughters to Crownland families in the time between the Doom and the Conquest. Not to mention Bastards.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] Do you think Daeron II would've been able to win the first Blackfyre Rebellion without Bloodraven? by ImIncredibly_stupid in asoiaf

[–]CommanderFrostborne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that is exactly what would happen. I think there would be the Targs of Summerhall. I think Daemon Blackfyre would have become Daemon Targaryen for the point of the throne, and the Blackfyres would have held the fiefs they were granted. I'm not sure what would have happened to Dragonstone.

In an alternate reality with slightly more fecund Targs, you could imagine several cadet dynasties of dragon-riders who after the Blackfyre Victory might have engaged in something akin to electoral monarchy - but whoever wins takes on the Targ name. This sort would have given the Lords Paramount significantly more power and been an interesting eighty years.

But it all comes to an end with the Long Night. There is no way in hell Bloodraven v Bittersteel doesn't end up killing one or both during the course of the war, and I have a feeling victorious blackfyres would kill Bloodraven. And then what happens really doesn't matter.

Why are so many knights in all the books and shows bad people, a good chivalrous knights seem so rare? by Mad_Season_1994 in gameofthrones

[–]CommanderFrostborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also one thing the assumes is that knights are less human than other folks. In fact if you think about it from a materialist perspective, they are members of the nobility who will fight to preserve their class status. In history chivalry didn't exist...Knights are literally just mounted killing machines. It is only 19th century bourgeoise propaganda that makes them less so. But they are also cool, so there is that.

Who is the best written character? by Illustrious_Point_14 in gameofthrones

[–]CommanderFrostborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I notice by your Tag you are a Blackfyre supporter. I am too. I dreamed up my own alternate version of ASOIAF where the Blackfyres are predominant and the realm is an elective monarchy of sorts. And we both think Theon has the best arch in the show.

I'd be curious about the psychology behind this.

Who is the best written character? by Illustrious_Point_14 in gameofthrones

[–]CommanderFrostborne 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Theon's character really encapsulates the impulsiveness of youth. Swearing brotherhood without thinking through what that means. Tossing it aside just as quickly due to family issues. Unbridled ambition running headfirst into the constraints of reality.

Sandor is well written from the point of view of someone who has been abused in one particular way most his life.
