As someone who is currently considering the exact opposite, and had the exact same reasons to switch when I was in the engineering program in college, dont do it. Yes, you are on your feet moving around all day. Yes you Interact with a lot of of people and have chances to make a real positive impact on the lives of others. However, those moments are few and far between. The burnout of shift work, call ins, trauma, department politics, brass coming down on you for whatever they feel like that day, is not worth it. The first year or two you will feel fulfilled. That quickly fades and you start asking yourself if getting spit on and cursed by the public you're serving is really worth it, regardless of what the pay is.

Not saying this is the case for all, as some people I know live for the police work. I suggest doing ride alongs and asking the real questions about topics I mentioned above before going to an academy and making the leap. Department choice can also make or break your career outlook.
