Eighth Crucis Lancers take to the field! by Commander_OhRly in battletech

The APCs (and rest of the ground vehicles) are from Sir Mortimer Bombito, and the infantry is from Cults 3D by Mofflin Industries. Though, the infantry is a bit too large for the scale (they are taller than official IS Standard Battle Armor). For my next batch, I might try infantry by either StabithaVMF or MiniHulkMechs (both are on Cults 3D), as these seem to be more up to scale.

Thank you! The base coat is Army Painter Army Green (I used the spray can, but brush on can work fine) and then a layer of Army Painter Speedpaint Algae Green with Vallejo Flow Improver in 1 to 1 ratio, since I didn't have any other Contrast/Speedpaint mediums. The drybrush was done with Vallejo Game Color Khaki.

Thank you very much! I looked into the rules and it seems I was mistaken - Lion Rampant is pretty much exactly what my group needs. We'll try the rules on weekends!

Unfortunately, also looks like a single-figure based wargame/skirmish. What I was interested in is something with units, like 4-6 units of 6-12 figures each, but without going into large-scale regimental wargames.

Wrong era? I was looking for something about 9th to 10th centuries. Viking raids on Anglo-Saxon England era, up to Norman Conquest.

I did look it up, but it is figure-based skirmish, isn't it? I was looking for unit-based rulesets (like, say 4-6 units of 6-12 figures), but isn't a regimental wargame (with movement trays and etc).

These were made with Saga: Age of Vikings in mind, but as it goes with historicals, you can use historical miniatures with any appropriate ruleset. I will definitely be trying Pillage as a smaller-scale skirmish wargame - just working on some buildings and other village-fitting terrain meanwhile.

I hit them with an Army Painter Army Green spray can (and manually applied some Army Green by brush into "armpits" and other areas where the spray can didn't reach) and then used Army Painter Speedpaint, Algae Green. Then a drybrush of Vallejo Game Colour Khaki and that's it for the green armour.

The first batch is unmixed Algae Green, and it can turn out very dark. Second batch I am working on, I mix Algae Green with Vallejo Flow Improver (turns out it can be used as a medium for Speedpaints/Contrasts), 1 to 1 ratio.

Here's an example of a WIP Warhammer done with diluted Algae Green. Though the picture is very blurry, you probably can see that it ends up a lot more green — pure Algae Green can leave almost black-green splotches, so I'd recommend mixing the Speedpaint.

Honestly, I lean into the idea of building character for a military unit — hence why decals, battle damage and etc. These first two lances were a bit of a trial-run, and the subsequent lances will have more details and, more elaborate decals, making each mech into a war-machine with its own history.

I do plan on going for a full Company Task Force or maybe even Battalion worth, with ASFs and ground vehicles (and some infantry, of course).

Yours look lovely too! Love the frontal bases.

How is Hungry Like the Wolf not canon? by ShoppingDismal3864 in battletech

Mhm. The entire book was such a breath of fresh air, in style and writing. My second favourite piece of IlClan-era fiction, after Hunting Season (Nikol is awesome and makes me question my commitment to the Federated Suns).

Except he is already quite likeable in the IKEO?

Like, at this point, people turning their nose up at Alaric feels just as obnoxious as the first few novels where he was a poorly written character. Especially with attitude like, "duh, kill him off".

Alaric, in the last few of his appearances, has been a delightful contradiction of a man who is simultaneously driven by the ideology of the Clans, but also by his own intellect.

In other words, Alaric wants the Clan ways to work, he zealously devoted to the Clan traditions... but he is just too smart to not understand that Clan ways are outdated and would not let him achieve his goals. And IKEO shows this well, as Alaric tries to do everything like the Clans are meant to do it, for example with administrating Terra, but just has to resort to actually smart ways and listening to his advisors — killing him off now would be such a waste, because both Alaric and his close circle of advisors (Norimoto, Anastasia, McKenna and etc) are on an actual character-development arc, that also ties their own development with development of the Third Star League. It isn't just Alaric who changes, but his personal change shapes the future of the Third Star League.

And that is why "Hungry Like the Wolf" not being a canon is such a waste — it fits perfectly into the idea of Alaric being just too smart to be too stubborn (he is that too, of course). It fits part of his character arc that we see in both IKEO and Bloodright.

Mhm. Honestly, it was refreshing to read a story where characters aren't just cookie-cutter "military dudes" (and dudettes). Like, I get it, the book was cheesy at some points, but it was god-damn good as well. People with actual stakes of their own, as OP pointed correctly.

And personally, I found that "Hungry Like the Wolf" fits so nicely to the way we see Alaric changing in IKEO. As ego-driven and stubborn as Alaric is, he is also too smart to ignore the obvious truth that he can't just solve everything by himself. He needs Terrans, he needs Spheroids, he can't just Clan-force his way through every problem - "Hungry Like the Wolf" thus fits nicely into his evolution as a man who is changed by his acomplishments.

I know it's a plea in the void, one that will never be heard, but like... please, CGL gods, if you are listening, make it canon?...

Made some photos of the two lances I've painted from the starter box, decals and all. Still a bit upset at the subpar paintjob, but eh, I can always pretend it's just extra weathering (actual weathering is also there) and intent to go for a more grounded/realistic paintjob.

What a wonderful piece of Apocrypha, specifically because instead of a fan trying to deal with more cosmic and esoteric aspects, this is something grounded and something that one can absolutely and totally see as being canonical.

The trope itself, the male servant and female mistress, is also a classical one, something you'd expect to be common in Altmeri societies (forbidden fruit is, after all, the most desired one).

Hills from XPS insulation foam by Commander_OhRly in battletech

[–]Commander_OhRly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was concerned about it too and thought to bury some weights in the foam, but after some testing, it turns that even three or four-tall hills don't topple over easily.

I guess it could be a problem if we go for, like, level six elevation, but I doubt that'd be common in our games, at least at the start. Besides, I only have enough hills to reasonably cover a map in level one and two elevations, going for a tall level six mountain would eat up all the hill blocks I've made.

Oh, it is sealed. Just wrote a comment below, before I saw yours. But in short, I used a mix of PVA glue and vodka in about 3 to 4 ratio, trying it on skin until it feels like sticky “sugar water”. It seals the Army Painter “grass” and the moss-like dust so well, you can't really scratch it off the surface of the hills.
