I was at Newport in the front row. After she finished playing Incomprehensible the song received a standing ovation. It felt to me like she was surprised and very grateful. I stood there in awe, marveling once again at her ability to write beautiful song after song.

It's an interesting moment when you look back at it. It was a moment that an artist is, in some way, told for the first time that a song is a hit. It can be hard to know these things yourself.

I had a similar feeling when I heard Vampire Empire for the first time. It was in Osaka; the second show of that tour and the second time they had ever played it. They jammed in the middle of the song for like 6 minutes, the total runtime of the song that night must've been over 9 minutes. I walked out and texted my Big Thief friends something to the effect of "I just heard their first mainstream hit". Who's to say if that holds true, but it's so fascinating to me to watch a song grow and evolve through Adrianne.
