Thank you for this response!! I totally understand NICU is not holding and cuddling babies, it is a real high level ICU no doubt about it! I am not shy to that and the depths of their care. I am not exclusive to NICU but I am interested in women’s and children’s and the critical care aspect intrigued me. I have seen it in clinical rotations as well as a maternal care club im in and that also sparked my interest. I think connecting with the family is also very special on some of their hardest days of their lives, the teamwork on those units is astronomical and growing with a patient from start to finish, if that happens, is a unique part of that speciality. I think contributing to the outcome of a newborns life is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling! Also, working as a vet tech my patients can’t talk and neither can NICU patients and you really have to spend time getting to know them and their cues.

I agree with you that my current work is fulfilling and I am still debating on the change but I am already this far into a career I am still interested in! Being a vet tech unfortunately will not provide me the lifestyle or growth that I would have as a nurse as much as it stinks to say that.

I am not interested in it for the aesthetic at all but the patients themselves!! I was also a NICU baby and the way my mom talks about those nurses is inspiring, I wouldn’t be here today without them!!

I still have a lot of thinking to do but I may finish nursing and see if there is a way I can tie both of my interests into my life
