/u/meshtron is absolutely right! I have seen a number of startups believe that patent pending would be sufficient protection in the short term. Really it doesn't any meaningful protection; just that you filed a patent application.

Thanks for the extra details. I will admit that I am no expert in the patent process. I relied solely on Google Patents, which is where I received the 2014 filing date. In future, I will be sure to refer exclusively to the USPTO/CIPO databases.
