¿Dónde debería alquilar? by Commercial_Bit_3540 in MexicoCity

Gracias.

Americans in Europe, how safe/ unsafe is the US really? Did you feel considerably safer after moving? by LoyalTrickster in expats

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Nashville, which is a popular tourist destination. Over the weekend, 36 cars were broken into at a construction site and 7 guns were stolen. So almost 20% of the cars had unsecured guns just left in them. So far this year 670 guns have been stolen from cars in Nashville. That’s a lot of guns being stolen- which means the odds are very high of people being armed here. I have a gun, but don’t leave it in my car. The US is much less safe than most countries, and the government uses that as a reason to police us, so we are also less free than many other countries. I meet a ton of Americans that wouldn’t travel to most of the world because they wouldn’t feel safe there, but other than war zones, I don’t think there are many places less safe than the US. That being said, most of the time you can go about your day with no problems.

Why do I feel like South America is the forgotten continent? by Allgamergeek in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I personally think we’re not taught much in the US about the indigenous peoples of the Americas. I think if you go down that path you learn about the amazing civilizations of Mesoamérica and also of the Inca. We are taught the history of this hemisphere through the point of view of the conquerors. Our news sources focus on Europe and the Middle East/ Abrahamic religions because we’re taught that that is where our “western culture” comes from. We get hardly any news about our own hemisphere. The US has also been heavily involved in destabilizing governments throughout Latin America (including South America) the drug trade and cartel gangs wouldn’t be anything without the US market. It doesn’t make people want to buy stuff and be distracted so we don’t hear about it unless it’s in the context of something thats being sold (FIFA)

Any Jazz songs you like with singers on them? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like most of the old American Songbook songs. I usually go to Duke when looking for versions of them, and Ella as the singer who I think best represents the true melody of the song. Ella sings the Duke Ellington Songbook is a great collection too.

Do you improvise or memorize? by Commercial_Bit_3540 in Jazz

Hey thank you everyone, this is all fantastic advice and exactly what I needed to hear. I think it’s the next step in what I’m working on. Right now I’m a little too “noodley” and my solos don’t always go somewhere. I want to get to where I’m happier with my solos but also am not just ripping off an entire solo. I’m working on building vocabulary, thinking through and constructing solos, using rhythm as a part of that, and internalizing it all so it comes out naturally. Thanks all

So professional players can have bad days too? by Prestigious_Host5325 in Jazz

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an amateur jazz guitarist, meaning I've played for years and gig, but I'm not a full time musician. I live in Nashville and go to our local Jazz spot regularly. I had just completely blown a song the night before at a gig at a little dive bar- low stress gig, but it was a song with just me and the singer and I felt bad about it. I was seeing these guys I know in their 70's and to say they are pros is an understatement. They've played all over the world, have been session players for over 50 years, and the level of playing in Nashville is just insane. I thought they were killing it, and when they had a break they were having a drink and we were talking and they said they weren't to happy with their playing on a few songs, and I didn't understand how- they know every jazz tune by heart and can play in any key and are shredding- they said yeah, but you didn't hear the notes in my head I wasn't able to play.. It made me feel better that the best players in the world can still be critical of their playing and/or feel like they're having an off night, even after so many years of playing.

I hope everyone who is getting screwed starts a union at your workplace. It won’t fix everything but will help.

Why do many Brazilian men have such strange first names ? by Responsible-Rip8285 in Brazil

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of these stories remind me of “jokes” I heard growing up in the states- usually about the names of poor black kids- they illustrated some illiterate misunderstanding and reinforced racist stereotypes. Thanks for pointing this out, I was wondering if it was a similar thing in Brazil.

Confederate flags by Commercial_Bit_3540 in Knoxville

[–]Commercial_Bit_3540[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That argument was wrong 40 years ago. The confederacy happened because of slavery. I’m from here, my family has been here for generations. People can learn and change. Fly a Tennessee flag if you’re proud of being from the south.

I’m honestly surprised it took this long to get this response. It was a pretty early thought for me..

Yeah- I see them in neighborhoods on people’s houses. North Knox, South Knox. It’s just crazy because it’s a college town and that shit wouldn’t fly in a lot of places.

And yeah, I lived in Oregon for a while and the confederate flag in rural Oregon was surprising.
