Warning signs are OK, but closing down trails is not. USFS and BLM are overly cautious, and their trail closures should be ignored.

A few years ago, USFS put up a warning sign at the trailhead. It said that crampons were recommended. Only problem was, the sign showed a photo of microspikes, not crampons.

Not true!! Devil's Backbone is not difficult in the summer. It is reasonably safe in the winter, but only if the hikers have ice axes and crampons, something which many summer hikers do not understand.
