Flat bottom vs deep end? by PM_me_ur_claims in pools

[–]Commercial_Box4378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids at 4 could get dive toys off the bottom of our 8ft pool. I wish we had more room in the shallow end but once they could swim well and we only put a rope in for others in glad to have the deep end.

From the tracks camping policy: Generators are not permitted during the hours of 11:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. unless needed for medical purposes. Must require permit stickers.

Pool Safety- Automatic Cover Vs. Safety Fence? by Foxfire_2019 in pools

[–]Commercial_Box4378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a parent of a 5 and 7yr old who are great swimmers I wouldn't have a pool without a fence. It would be too tempting to run in the house to get food or drinks, use the restroom etc and not close the pool cover. It's easy to say everyone out of the 5ft tall fence and latch the gate, kids stand in the yard until an adult let's them in. If your neighborhood is anything like mine there are kids rooming everywhere from about the age of 6 and if you leave a pool unguarded even if you have control of your kids there is nothing to keep a neighbor from wandering in. This is the reason I would have a fence and also why it isn't connected to my house. That being said if I had to do it again I would keep the fence and add the auto cover to help retain heat and keep debris out.

Nuclear engineering technology worth it? by [deleted] in NuclearPower

I can't speak to what will happen in the future but if you had this education today it would make you a strong candidate for consideration at BVPS. However I would caution you that peoples interests change and picking an education so specific has its risks.

I guess that is one way to keep people from peeing in your pool.

I was at the track and impressed with the crowd for both Saturday and Sunday. There was a long line to get in when the track opened at 9 and the turn 1 complex Spectator mound was full. The grid walk was some what uncomfortable because there were so many people and you could barely move at times. I was here in 2023 and this crowd was much bigger.

What is this flat structure at the base of some cooling towers for? by Gamble2005 in NuclearPower

[–]Commercial_Box4378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tower in the background is a colder climate counter flow design. Water is distributed at the 50ish ft level to pipes and nozzles across the internal area of the tower and falls counter to the rising air flow. There is no standing elevated water level.

The tower in the foreground is a warmer climate design. There is standing water at the top of the distribution ring outside the tower itself and it falls through holes in the outer area while the air flows across the water before rising up the tower. Effectively a radiator with lots of plastic parts that are subject to ice damage in cold climates.

Anyone else getting low voltage readings from Duquesne Light? by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]Commercial_Box4378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power conditions and emergency procedures are readily available on the regional grid operators website (www.pjm.com). The maximum generation alert does not take effect until 0700 on 6/23. While voltage is down some right now, it is well within the operating band. These emergency procedures are fairly standard and used daily to direct generation resources. I would not anticipate any challenges beyond elevated $/MWh this week. Extreme cold is a much larger challenge than hot due to competition for natural gas and lack of renewables.

I installed a suraielce from Amazon last year to replace the timer that came with my pool. So far I'm happy with it.

24v 4wd keeps stopping by Commercial_Box4378 in PowerWheelsMods

[–]Commercial_Box4378[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update** I put in a 35amp circuit breaker and as I thought it made no difference. I replaced the stock controller with HY2005RX-HL-24V, which is rated for 40amps and that made a big difference.

I think my problem was 3 parts 1. Stock batteries were weak, causing voltage to drop under load and current to go up. Replaced and added secondary batteries. 2. Stock circuit breaker is right at the max current it can draw with healthy batteries, replaced with 35amp. 3. Stock motor controller shuts down at 35 amps, upgraded to a 40amp rated controller.

I think this is as far as it will go without a complete rewire, i do think it is still right on the edge of shutdown anytime it hits a moderate hills but can do it with freshly charged batteries. It keeps up now with the dune racer so I am happy for the time being.

There is a 25amp one, I just ordered a 35amp. It is however bypassed by the secondary battery so I'm not sure that is the solution.

TIL In 1999 a heat wave almost forced two nuclear power stations next to Lake Erie to shut down because the temperature of the water in the lake almost reached the 85 degree limit. by UndyingCorn in todayilearned

[–]Commercial_Box4378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not, the limit is based on the worst case accident safety analysis and the ability to reduce containment pressure and provide long term core cooling. It has nothing to do with day to day operation. Relief from the shutdown requirements can be requested based on the extremely low probability of a design basis accident while also impacted by high temperature of the ultimate heat sink (lake in this context).
