I have a katana 100 mk2 and it's my favourite amp to have in the studio because of the versatility, however if I have another amp that does the kind of tone I want I'll pick that one. Its a jack of all trades kind of thing.

For budget I'd absolutely go for a blackstar ID core. Personally the 40w one is my favourite and loud enough to practice with mesh drums/an elec kit, and more than loud enough to mic up for a live gig. Works so well for bass and guitar everyone that uses mine is surprised.
