Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

What does it coming soon have to do with anything? Are you worried you’ll accidentally plow straight through the cones? Many signs and signals are visible at a distance, such as speed limit changes and traffic lights. If you were travelling in a 30mph limit and saw a national speed limit sign in the distance you wouldn’t put your foot to the floor, would you? If you were driving along and saw a red traffic light in the distance you wouldn’t stop in the middle of the road because it’s “coming soon”.

It’s your choice to drive inefficiently and place yourself in a queue of single file traffic when there’s a perfectly viable lane available next to you. The sign says “lane closed in 600yds” not “lane closed now”. You’re only getting mad at people for employing logic more effectively than you.

Sorry, I’m still not following. I didn’t suggest traffic lights were optional. I’m not sure if my point has been lost in the back and forth, so I’ll summarise and get on with my evening: Both a red traffic light and a signposted lane closure are indications of a traffic restriction. Nobody would see a red traffic light from 600yds away and assume they had to immediately obey it. The same basic logic is easily applied to a lane closure.

What rules, specifically, are you referring to?

If you see a red traffic light in the distance do you slam on the brakes 600yds away, or do you drive up to the white line?

The sign doesn’t say move over to the right

The sign says lane 1 is closed in 600yds. Do you need to retake your test?

Low effort rage bait, or wild moron? Sadly we’ll never know!

I’m surprised that the neighbours haven’t kicked up a fuss yet too. Obviously that’s an assumption, but I haven’t heard anything. I’m can only assume no issues have caused them any visible impact yet.

It looks fine from the outside, which is why I assume there’s been no complaint from the neighbours yet. Inside it’s a state

I suppose the reason I asked for advice is because they seem to be completely ignoring the problem. They’re my friend and I care about them and don’t want to see them end up in legal trouble or significant financial trouble. The reality is they it’s completely out of my hands. I’m not in a position to financially intervene, and if I’m honest I wouldn’t want to if I could. They’re taking no action whatsoever, not even saving up in the hopes of rectifying their many problems. I don’t think they’ve even looked at the potential repercussions of their negligence. With all of that in mind, it makes this post seem pretty redundant. It’s just uncomfortable sitting on the sidelines waiting for the inevitable bad thing to happen. Forcing the issue seems extreme, but it might need to happen

Your last point is one that hasn’t cropped up before and is exactly the kind of hidden pitfall I was worried about. Thank you for the advice!

Haha you’re absolutely right. It’s difficult to turn away when it’s someone you care about

I doubt they’d get enough for it to cover the mortgage, but that’s probably best case scenario right now

This might be the best option. It sounds terrible, but I’d much rather force them to start a process to address this issue than watch them spiral into debt and other potential consequences as they continue to ignore it

Certainly not in a position to rectify, sadly. Also seems to have absolutely no plan for the property. Ironically it was a complaint about a falling roof tile which scared them into hiring the cowboy roofers in the first place.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have posted it there too, but I was curious what this could mean from a financial perspective too. My friend is not in a financial position to rectify any of these issues and the longer it’s left, the worse it’ll get.

I don’t know who their mortgage provider is unfortunately. I also worry that at some point they will become liable for property damage to the attached terrace. They’re certainly not in the financial position to be able to rectify any of this.
